My R1200S blew its engine yesterday

Second owner, out of warranty, 1/3 factory-1/3 dealer-1/3 you
standard good will coverage from a major manufacturer with dealer involvement.
Moto Marin is awesome-my next bike will be from them :thumbup

Holy smokes; that's one damned expensive engine repair!

How much is a new engine?

Building an engine from OEM parts picked from the catalog will cost you more than MSRP of the bike. Not counting labor.

Interesting. What were your rpm's at the time of the failure? From your description, it doesn't sound like a timing issue where the cam timing on that side got out of sync or the cam stopped. Two possibilities (of many, I'm sure) that I can think of are the valve guide wore excessively and because of angular misalignment, the valve had trouble closing fast enough. Or perhaps a spring failed or lost a lot of it's strength. We may never know.

If it were me, I'd ask for the old parts just 'cause.

Yeah, why not an engine swap? That would make more sense to me...

Because you can't promise that any other engine was properly maintained? Not to mention that if someone was going to repair your engine, would you want it done with unknown parts at unknown specs, or new fresh parts?

I'm guessing that ohio was implying a swap with a new engine, not someone else's old engine. I know this is BMW and all, but I can't imagine that a complete new engine would be $6K- if it is, that's criminal. I'd guess that the labor saved from swapping a whole engine vs tearing the current one down and swapping the majority of moving bits would make the former a viable option.

The bike cost over 17k new. I could absolutely imagine a new BMW engine, as a retail "part", listing for over $6100.

See? A lot of us are not in the business to make money then bail. Make sure you Yelp them if you do Yelp. :)

I'm no mechanic, but those three parts don't represent a "new engine" do they? What about cylinders, pistons, valves, cams, guides... all that stuff?

Yeah. . . . that much of an engine isn't really going to get you very far. You'd want things like a crankshaft, rods, pistons, cylinders, cams, valves, etc. New crate engines ain't cheap.

I'm glad that the bike is getting fixed- it's a cool bike.

It is retail, and that's why the dealer felt it right to contribute money to the overall cost (AKA discounting the retail price). I still feel as though the dealer handled this well. BMW NA handled it OK.

If YOU feel good about the results then that's all that matters. Congrats on getting this squared away.

Nah, the 3 parts were listed just for their retail value. $6150 for a complete engine isn't that far off the mark, almost cheap by BMW standards.

How much for pistons, valves, valve guides, valve springs, cams, crankshaft, con rods, cam followers (or whatever they use to actuate valves), all the bolts, the sealent, the oil, the transmission, a clutch, etc. I'd put money on assembling an engine from the OEM parts list costing at least 10k. You're at 2700 for just the engine cases, let alone all the stuff that goes inside.

Linky and then click on "11-Engine".

If you were going to put a whole new engine in, you probably wouldn't order it as individual parts from the catalog. Ordering a whole crate motor would definitely be cheaper than ordering all the parts individually.

Only one way to find out... I'll ask them at service the next time I call. I'll let ya all know.

Cool, I'm definitely curious about that. I remember my friend who worked in a shop for a long time talking about how once they tallied up the cost to build a Z1 (he's an older gentleman) from the parts catalog, and it ended up running them over 15k before they stopped counting. :laughing

Razel, That site is not compatible with any of my browsers, haha.

Edit: Works in IE8. Anyways, it's a grand for the rockers alone. :laughing Not counting anything else, just the physical rockers themselves, 140$ each x8. 500$ in camshaft brackets, 300$ in conrods, 800$ in pistons, 650$ in valve covers, 900$ for the crank, 160$ in bearings, another 1200$ in cams...and that's not counting all the little stuff that nickles and dimes you to death. A little over 8 grand from just going and grabbing the big items off that microfiche :)
