Nation-wide climate strike by students

Was watching the Bloomberg channel recently. It's been reported that there have been a million deaths in China attributed to their polluted air. By far, they have been the greatest polluter. They've pulled backed on production and are seeking green solutions. Their economy will still rely on coal in the short term.

This goes to prove, change doesn't happen until shit happens to your part of the world.

You've heard, "Necessity is the mother of invention"?

Do you have actual arguments besides strawmanning and absolutes?
So you say NOTHING, but expect me to say more. :rolleyes
I asked questions. NOT surprisingly YOU HAVE NO ANSWERS. You fit perfectly with the majority of paper tigers in the kitchen sink.

Dude, you posed a bunch of stupid rhetoricals :laughing

Really angry old people angry that young people pointing out said old people knew the existing paradigm was bad, and did nothing to address it.

There’s an entire culture and way of life that needs to die out, sooner rather than later, before real solutions can be enacted

What people are proposing isn’t new lol

Clean energy investment, a move away from coal and fossil fuels en masses
A reduction in personal transportation in favor of mass transit, with required personal transportation being based on cleaner energy sources
A less meat based diet
Less consumerism, less single use items, lower plastic production.
Less deforestation in favor of more sustainable models of farming

It’s nothing new, it’s nothing bad.

Fair enough, my position is that the voters are responsible of electing the officials, and recalling/ not re-electing them if they are unhappy with the officials performance, but the voters are not responsible for the actions of the official while in office.

Power and a certain level of autonomy were given to the elected offical in order to perform their duties, if that power is misused, the official is legally and morally responsible, not the voters who elected them. Perhaps it was a jump in logic on my part, thinking that was close to what you were arguing.

Fair enough. :dunno

Doesn't that put us back where we started?

Oh, that's why I strive to be an elected official, so I can fuck up and blame everyone else. :laughing

Not really, because Protest is still an utterly useless medium with no quantifiable results for system change. If you default to not trusting any politicians, I reckon your results driven options are 3.

Try to use the system to create change (Sue the government agencies, Draft bills to submit to legislators, run for office, etc) (hard work and tough to get actual results), leave the Country you do not trust for one that you do (easy to accomplish, easy to observe results), or attempt to use violence to force change (mainly for crazy people most the time).

There are countless assumptions that you are careful to overlook so your sanctimonious soundbites pass the red face test.

What about access to information and an independent free press? What about the 4+ hour polling lines in poor and minority communities? What about gerrymandering and the herculean efforts to disguise it? What about election machines that change your vote?

The list goes on and on...

It must take a large effort on your part to maintain your brand of absolutism in the face of observable reality.

All of the minutia you seem fixated on are articles that can be addressed by the people who control the system, which is again, the masses. Hell, some of them are things I have previously brought up on the forum as issues that require change to help fix our democracy. The difference seems to be one of perspective. I own my participation in society, and recognize that since I choose to be a part of this nation, its poor decisions are a part of me, as much as its successes and great victories. If you choose instead to play the victim and insist society is doing shit to you that isn't your fault, I guess that is your choice, but we had a name for that type of guy when I was growing up.

I'm not sure waht absolutism are you referring to exactly? The only absolute position I have taken is that meaningless sentimental gestures (street protest) are garbage, and we are all responsible for the lives we live. Each person's life is their own responsibility, their own fault. The society they choose to participate in is one of their choosing.

If you don't like it, take action to change it, but wasting time crying while doing nothing, but holding a sign because it makes your feels all sweaty is self indulgent, narcissistic bullshit. It is garbage culture driven be herd animals who have feels abotu issues and give a shit if they are alone in their feels or not. They want to feel united in their feels, and once that is accomplished, they can all go home and weep with relief that they finally did something, when really they didn't do shit but spend a ton of tax money on managing the feels-o-rama they were shitting all over the streets while the rest of society was trying to actully do something useful like go to work.

That paradigm leaves a great and wide range of options on what choices an individual and a society can make, with the exception of little tolerance for waste and inefficiency in effort.

whoa- why are you all replying to this as serious? i assumed that he is a satyrical/farce poster? is this person actually serious?

Yes, I have a position on independence, personal responsibility, and the destruction of Groupthink that is farther out than most people are comfortable with. :laughing

We are so close. Too bad the death throes of a toxic generation vomited up the most toxic boomer of all to wreak as much havoc on their way out as possible.

Yep.
Also I gave you answers in various other threads about climate change. Including US. Military assessment of it. You chose to ignore all of it and continue posing rhetorical rants full of strawman and absolultism. So there is that.

We seriously need to get the fuck on board with Nuclear Power, sorry Wes Virginny. Maybe they could make some sort of deal in congress to put manufacturing for the nuclear facilities into West Virginia to prop them up for the loss of coal business?

Where do you propose nuclear waste be stored?
They been building that facility in Nevada for what 30 something years now? Every senator, congressman's and governor from that's state R or D vowes to oppose it. Can't really blame them. Who the fuck wants that shit in their "backyard".

Too true.

Look at Hanford in Washington, it's a site that should have been cleaned up decades ago and every year delayed doubles the cost to clean it up! Also, it is very close to the Columbia river and it's only a matter of time before it starts seeping into that river, then the cost to clean up goes through the roof.

At least that somewhat gives us a choice. Right now we just let the energy production waste go up in air.

I worry about human fallibility and larger scale nuclear use for sure. I’d much rather the continued exponential growth in wind and solar continue. Wind is REALLY coming on strong in many areas of the country and is like to see that. Centralized NG plants with focus on electric homes and transportation is also a better idea, though not in the long long term.

There also needs to be a come to Jesus moment about resource usage, waste, comfort level expectations, etc. people need to understand that not only do we need to make cleaner energy, but that they need to use less of that energy.

Good luck with the reduction now that the nation is getting warmer and the need for air conditioning keeps increasing.

The current renewable energy sources are unreliable and result in a lot of toxic waste in their production. Windmills have a problem now with de-lamination. I have read that nuclear is the cleanest energy production to date.

Why isn’t the USA and China included in St Greta’s lawsuit?

you don't do much research before you post do you?

https://www.businessinsider.com/fre...bergs-climate-change-lawsuit-2019-9?r=US&IR=T

The five named countries join 44 others that ratified the convention's power to hear complaints against them; however, the United States and China, which are the biggest culprits among the world's top greenhouse-gas emitters, haven't signed the section of the treaty allowing children to seek justice for infringements.

haha fair enough. strangely enough the usa is one of the worse places in terms of actual independence and a sense of personal responsibility that i have seen. wonder why is that if not simply my own interpretation.
