Newbie Passenger

I'm confused about what she has been saying for a few posts now. So my message to her is forget about my offer to her, lol, I thought she was a newbie passenger and wouldn't mind learning with a newbie SAFE rider. I want to learn how to ride with someone on my pillion too. Seems like she knows what she wants already though.

I just don't want the same sex with me on my pillion LMFAO, hope you understand. It's a guy/natural thing I guess.

Please wait. Newbies have no business putting a pillion upon their bike. They don't have the muscle memory or experience to respond in the one second or less available in the event something unexpected happens... couple that with the bike's handling being compromised due to the increased load from a passenger, and it's potentially a recipe for disaster.
When you have several thousand miles under your belt (and I'm not talking 3, 4, 5, 6000 here... I mean more), then give it a shot. Understand that you are taking responsibility FOR THEIR LIFE. You'd best have the skills to keep them alive.

True dat gixxergirl.

I honestly am in no Rush. I like riding own my own with no attachments, no one riding with me as a passenger me, on my own. All part of the riding experience.

And an experienced pillion rider is the best thing for a newbie rider that would like to learn.

But I do miss sometimes that someone holding your waist or vice versa but that's another story. :D

But also gixxegiirl, you got let thing unfold though and happen if it happens. I mentioned in my previous post that communication beforehand and practice in a parking lot is key. I'm the type to research things and make sure she would lean the same the direction and degree I would lean..etc, etc.

Other people may not be like that.

This is you not heeding her advice, simply tip toeing around it. If you're going to ignore it, just say it outright.

BTW, last group ride I was on, two riders on 250's laid their bikes down and both had been riding for several months. Ask yourself if you're experienced enough to not do the same and what would happen if that was you with someone on the back.

On a side note, does this mean that you have ridden as a passenger? :wtf

The subject of the thread from the beginning says Newbie Passenger. So we answered as if you are a new passenger. You should have nipped it in the butt so to speak a long time ago instead if leading us to believe so.

Well said! :thumbup

Years ago, when I was first together with my now ex-husband, the only transportation we had was my motorcycle... and I wasn't about to ride bitch on my own bike... so he did! :teeth
And over the last 20+ years of riding, I've had half a dozen guys ride 2-up with me... ;)

So you've had passengers on your bike before then since "you miss..that someone holding your waist" lol which means you're not completely new to the idea of riding with passengers.

Anyways, riding with a passenger is a lot of fun but it also puts a lot of responsibility on your shoulder(and adds another huge factor to your ride). Some riders prefer to ride solo, some don't, some really don't care either way. If you are still piling on miles onto your belt, riding solo could be the best way to go. I have probably done a few thousand miles with passenger on the back so I'm quite comfortable with that notion...but when it comes time for some spirited canyon riding, I would definitely prefer riding solo and that is just my preference. Safety is one of my priorities but with a passenger safety becomes a priority that is head and shoulders above the rest. As guys we definitely tend to do a little extra when there is a lovely lady sitting on the back lol gotta stay in check! ;) haha

Fuck that was my 2 cents lol

What's up with a Doc Wong or comparable Pillion rider clinic? I may sign up for that depending on conditions aforementioned.

Hey, I totally understand the desire to get out and ride with a lady friend behind you, but if you are not experienced. JUST DONT DO IT (sorry, dont mean to shout). And if you're on a sportbike, it really isn't all that comfortable anyway.

But if you insist on "going out to a praking lot" and practicing, here's my advice.

go get yourself a couple of 75 lb burlap bags. Fill em with sand. Lay em across the passenger seat (do NOT tie them down). Practice 10 - 25 stop n goes. Turn Around. Do it again. Repeat til you cant notice the weight difference (oh and probably stop n pick up the bags a bunch of times).

Take the bags off. Repeat to feel the difference.

Put the bags back on. Repeat.

Repeat, repeat, repeat...

When you can do that without the bags ever falling off. Start doing figure eights.

When you can do that. Go out and ride a couple thousand miles more.

Then consider taking on a passenger.

If you've never had road rash. Do research on that before researching how to ride with passenger.

I apologize if anyone feels "lectured", but as someone in a movie once said "yes, I am worried about my own skin. It covers my body". :twofinger

Edit:
Oh, and Doc Wong clinics, definitely recommend them. He usually does the same route for all the clinics, so you can tell how much better you've gotten by how challenging you find each progressive time out there. :)

Edit Edit:
@OP - if you don't have the money for your own bike now, start saving. If you're that experienced a passenger, you must've been riding backseat for a few years. $50 / month gets you $ 1200 in two years. There are good bikes out there for that little or even less. I was looking at a Virago to customize into a cafe/ bobber (yeah yeah, like the beauty in the Choppers, Bobbers thread). The owner was asking a couple thousand but let it go to someone for $ 650. I never even considered offering such a low ball price, but there you go. ... Just sayin'...

Honestly being in the back seat does nothing for me.
So I did try putting my ex on the back once, so that when we rode together I wouldn't always have to sit in the back... It didn't work out so well. It was just in a wide neighborhood street, but I had a hard time keeping my balance. Not something I'm going to try again, most likely. Then again I'm 120 lbs-ish and he was like 200 lbs.

I'd probably not get on the back of a person's bike who hasn't had passengers before.

It is a bit shaky when the first few times. After a while you get accustomed to the weight, the use of brakes, the balance and everything else. Also you are a fairly new rider yea? So I can definitely see a lot of shakyness and some danger haha

Wow...if i had time n money i wouldnt b asking. My friend told me i would find cool guys to ride with here at barf...but

Look, Kiddo, you're asking total strangers to take responsibility for YOUR life.
But if you really want to find some decent, experienced riders willing to carry a pillion, here's some suggestions:
1. Go out and buy the rest of the gear your missing- at the very least, some textile overpants, and get some riding boots.
2. Go to the "Socials" section on the forum, find some Bike Meets in your geographical location, and get out and meet some riders in person. Try to find someone who's been riding for a few years, and don't get up behind someone who's been riding his sprotbile for a year and has 2 bins under his belt. Much easier to get rides from people you actually know. Plus, you have a chance to figure out who's "safe" to get behind! :)
Here's a good place to start: Yana's Movie Nights Yana does movie nights every weekend... get a sitter, and go watch a movie with some BARFers... you'll meet some awesome South Bay peeps! :thumbup
3. Lastly, don't get up behind a moron willing to take an undergeared pillion up over triple digits; he's not doing you any favors, and is, in fact, significantly increasing your risk factor for injury or death.

Make an effort to get out and meet people, and you'll be pleasantly surprised how easy it can become to find some people willing to take you out for a ride! :)

Lol, this thread needs do die...I don't understand how time and money, no no "n" money is of some kind of importance here lol.

I give up.

I've rode as a passenger before. It's quite a odd experience when you're not in control but that's probably because I'm usually the one riding. Owning your own bike is great and it's cheap too. Well that depends on the bike really. I owned a 2007 Ninja 250 which I purchased for 2k and maintaining it was pretty much a breeze. Insurance and gas was very minimal. I think I paid 300 a year for my ninja and for gas I would get around 50 - 70 mpg really depends if I took it out on long free way speeds or just city riding.
