Newbies and the motorcycle wave gripe

I rode with a newbie that just started riding in June. He was griping a little about how he would wave at every rider but not all of them wave back. I told him that I've been a "M" endorsed rider since the early 90s and that's just how it is.

I also told him don't assume they just don't want to wave back as some my not even see your wave or they may be more comfortable with two hands on the handlebar. Sure there are riders that just don't wave but most are probably preoccupied with other things on their mind at that moment when you passed them.

If I am not preoccupied controlling the bike I will wave. If I get one back cool. If not cool. He will get it.

I dig the wave. Connects me.

At this point Mr Newb has bigger things to focus on.

I like the wave - I don't get why some people dislike it so much. It's a scary place out there on the road, especially on two wheels... why not acknowledge the only other motorists that are in the same boat as you while doing it?

That said... I do get a bit of an ironic chuckle out of the "Not in a place/situation to remove one of my hands from the bars" sentiments/comments. 😅

now that I ride a bike with nothing happening on the left hand grip, I only miss a wave when I'm enthralled with the scenery or otherwise too occupied to catch the oncoming moto in time.

Same, I do like a good wave but if I'm hustling around a corner or otherwise preoccupied and nod gets the job done.
I always wave or nod. As Nate said sometimes you need to get the job done; and someone always waves.

I do enjoy a spirited wave at spirited rider. I have to be turning left and past the apex so bike control is on point.

Occasionally. Depends on sightline, distance and my mood.

There's an article in Jalopnik today about the wave and it's meaning. Supposedly the upside down peace sign means to keep the rubber side down. I've used that wave for decades only because it's easy and I meant to use the peace sign. Most of the comments agreed with my assessment.
