NHTSA opens inquiry on BMW final drive failures

^^^Why are they modding the hell out of them if they come with all the options?
Do you mean they're stripping off their optioons to save weight?

My fave is that Porsche and BMW offer a lighter weight version of their premium cars.
Normal Porsche is $85k. Light Super Race Porsche, which is the same car but no AC, no nice seats, no padding, no radio, and poor people roll up windows is $105k.

You're assuming the Light Super Race Porsche is made with the same materials as the normal Porsche....it's not. That's where the money comes from. That and the engine being different too.

Oh and they're modding it because BMW charges more to add lights than it costs to do it yourself. That's no different with any other brand either.

A simple fuse box can be installed and is controlled off through a relay. It's exterior of the canbus system and I have it loaded up with power for the heated jacket, additional lighting, Zumo and JM Audio amplifier. My fuel gauge works fine. All of it is very simple to do if you have basic hand tools and any mechanical ability at all. There are multiple BMW bike boards out there with help to do just about anything. A simple web search and minimal reading comprehension will help tremendously.

This.

I installed a ten-block mini-fuse block into my left-side panel to power my GPS & PIAA lights, and have capacity for anything else that I want to add to my bike, like a Stebel Nautilus horn http://www.twistedthrottle.com/trade/productview/2137/ at 139 dB. :thumbup

And I can't believe I'm agreeing with Plumber on anything... :laughing

:facepalm

I don't know why I bother replying to you... but here I go again. No, they're not stripping off the options - they're making the bike "theirs." You know, like most people do, whether it's bling, luggage, electronics, performance stuff, or all of the above. Furthermore, the R1200R is a roadster, so it doesn't come with "all the options" nor did I say that. I was responding to the ridiculous idea that it was impossible to mod the bike without voiding the warranty.

Glad Kornholio already responded to your uninformed Porsche rant. "Poor people roll up windows"? You obviously don't understand what a "real sports car" used to be.

Here's another :facepalm for good measure. Jesus.

so what is the point of a hi-zoot electrical network system if it a) does the same thing as a non networked system and b) you have to bypass the whole thing to add features thereby removing whatever benefits the networked system could have offered in the first place?

And the funny thing? I didn't know fuel readings were an issue with other Beemers. I give Cincinnatus a hard time about the fuel thing because he actually had that problem and it took a few tries to sort it out. Here I thought it was just his luck :p

It's not a network system (at least one with a central node) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAN_bus. :twofinger

I don't 'bypass' it, I add things to it and don't have to worry about conflicts or software updates (think IBM MCA :nerd).

Fuel readings weren't the problem, the fuel tank sensors were bad (screwed up from the vendor-side). My luck is the suck... Good thing I had/have the four-year extended warranty... :laughing

The canbus system will shut down my heated grips and seat if the juice gets low. I'll keep the RPMs above 4k if I'm running the Gerbing, grips and seat on volcanic and the PIAAs on stun. The Canbus system replaces the fusebox and shuts down suspected components IN the system.

This thread = tl;dr, but I have a question for you knowledgeable BMW types.

Coming down 92 W into HMB today I came across a dude on a BMW1150 R or G or something (I just remember the 1150- maybe 1125? on the side and it being a BMW adv bike) pushing his bike along the side of the road. I was in my truck and had my ramps in the back so I pulled over to help, and as it turned out his rear wheel had come loose and was wobbling coming down the hill :wtf. I helped him torque his lugnuts back down, but neither one of us knew what would cause his wheel to loosen like that. Is it possible there's some extra force/vibration beyond normal being transmitted through the final drive and that's causing the wheel problems?

They 850s aren't particularly powerful, but I rode with an old dude (mid-60s) a few years back who had one that was less than 3 years old and had over 60k on it. Rode Ebbetts with him and he was fast and maybe a little crazy.

So while some folks are busy running their mouths and getting their bike run over by their mom, other folks are busy tearin' ass around serious twisties on bikes that are supposedly slow. Apparently it's not the bike that matters so much as actually riding it.

Why not ride a fun bike instead?
Wouldnt your old crazy fast friend be way faster on a good bike?

I never got that kinda logic. "Shitty bike" is just as good as "good bike" cuz I saw a guy go faster than I could on one.
