I bought my RT because of the available accessories. Heated grips, heated seat, ABS, adjustable windscreen, power outlets and a charging system that could power a small town weren't available on other bikes. It was as simple as that.

Did you care about the engine/trans/seating position or were your main concerns what you mentioned?
Personally I care mostly about engine/trans/seating. If I like the bike I can add most other stuff.....live without powering a space heater and 6 ipads if the rest of the bike is awesome.
I purchased a Russel Day Long seat. It is great and better than stock. The stock seat would get to me after about 4 hours. The new seat doesn't get to me at all. The engine and transmission are bulletproof. Sure you can add most stuff but a stock cruise control comes in handy after hours in the saddle. I knew I wanted the options so I just bought the bike that had them.

I'm sure I would have been happy with one but the vastly superior RT was the right choice for me. I'm still the same ol' loveable me and wave to all riders. Except Banjoboy

heated grips? First thing I put on ALL my bikes.
heated seat? Meh. I'm sure it's nice nice but I wouldn't know.
Cruise control. Yes please.
Adjustable windshield? absolutely
Power outlet? Must have. I even put one on my KTM.
Massive alternator. Absolutely. I've found ways to turn off things (like headlights) on my other bikes so I can run a heated vest.
And you know what? Add that kind of accessory to any of the other bikes (including ABS) and you get a bike that costs about the same.

The sad part is he's not as insane as I thought. He's in the ballpark. A buyer will talk him down to the $18k he wanted to get for it.I was hoping you'd say one sold for $13k or something.
Mine was $17,000 and it has every option but TPMS which isn't expensive anyway when compared to the other options...especially the sound system. My MSRP was over $24K.
If you don't know how to wheel N' deal, that's your problem.

Sorry, this is horseshit. Yes, it's true that there have been some issues with the fuel gauges - as if there have never been any issues with other brands.
But your ideas on the CANBUS system and the comparison to jailbreaking an Apple product (assuming you mean an iOS device, otherwise you've even more off-base) are just not true.
I bought a '11 R1200R a few months ago - basically a naked version of the RTs most of the guys in this thread ride. Guess what the first thing I did was? Ding, correct! I wired in a bunch of auxiliary power stuff. No issues with the CANBUS whatsoever, and I didn't have to get a permission slip or anything!
Over on the R1200R boards, there are a lot of guys modding the hell out of those things, and I don't recall any reports of warranties not being honored. "Can't do anything without either jailbreaking and voiding your warranty..." is simply not true.

My fave is that Porsche and BMW offer a lighter weight version of their premium cars.
Normal Porsche is $85k. Light Super Race Porsche, which is the same car but no AC, no nice seats, no padding, no radio, and poor people roll up windows is $105k.

A simple fuse box can be installed and is controlled off through a relay. It's exterior of the canbus system and I have it loaded up with power for the heated jacket, additional lighting, Zumo and JM Audio amplifier. My fuel gauge works fine. All of it is very simple to do if you have basic hand tools and any mechanical ability at all. There are multiple BMW bike boards out there with help to do just about anything. A simple web search and minimal reading comprehension will help tremendously.
