norton commando advice

The TR6 mentioned is the Tiger or Trophy. The single carb version of the twin carb Bonneville. Bit less performance, easier to keep in tune if you have only one worn out Amal, easier than 2 worn out Amals. Better gas mileage.
TR7 is the newer 750 single carb version. I was/am a Bonneville snob. Of all the Tri's I had, only 2 single carb versions.
I mainly flipped them so I always wanted to find the more desirable years and always the Bonnie's.

Well actually you put a lot of words in my mouth that weren't there, but I certainly agree. I'm not discouraging LB from buying one, I'm saying that there are issues she should know about. That, to me, seems helpful not discouraging.

thanks babe. this is exactly why i started this thread. and i am hugely thankful for all of the responses and useful information. much food for thought.

One carb? Never had any issues other than self inflicted by overtightening the slide caps. If there is only one carb, go back, you lost one!

The question is; can Littlebeast buy one of them?

Better gas mileage?

Who ever owned a Tr-6 that actually paid any attention to gas mileage?

Want an Old Brit that won't leave you stranded? Get a New Old One....Hinckley!

Norton is like the little girl in the fairy tale: When she's good, she's very good. When she's bad, she's awful.:laughing:laughing

I love my 67 atlas, never given me an ounce of trouble, except for a dead battery because I never ride it. :)

That's a nice build and worth the money. If I wanted to savagely punish myself and delight in it supremely, I'd buy it.

My old Interstate was that color, and I won many a drag race with modern 600s on it at SF stop lights. Big parallel twins have lots of low end grunt.

I've always said that my Buell Cyclone is really the Commando [or Bonneville] that I was too wise to purchase in the day

fast forward - anytime I weaken, repeating "Whitworth tools, Lucas electrics, & 40-yr-old rubber" does the trick.....

I think I'd rather have a new Street Cup or Thruxton. The Norton is good if you live at the top of a hill.

agreed

in fact, we now have a wide variety of both retro & modern twins from which to choose, a great situation

I have an 83 year old BSA, I wish it was a simple as just getting Whitworth tools, the thing seems to have some weird format and any time I work on it have to pull out the Whitworth, Metric, and SAE stuff to find wrenches that fit. The various thread standards are even worse, some strange mix of Britich Cycle Thread, BSF and whatever the lathe happened to be set for that day.

The Lucas bits seem OK so far, probably because my expectations are so low and I have only ridden it a total of about 5 miles since I bought it two years ago since pieces keep breaking or falling off.
