Obesity, A Solution Seams Obvious

"Gutting through it" will get you hurt. A year ago I injured a calf muscle while jogging (following two cute girls and I didn't want to stop from what I thought was only a leg cramp). :laughing

The next day the calf was hurting and turned all blackish-blueish. Healed for a month, then started running...and reinjured it. :x

Well I'm no "Stud" for sure, I know where I work my times are "O'kay" for my Age and I know fitness is relative to the individual for sure.

But even when I was doing the Corporate shuffle "Support Director" thing I could muster 2 miles in under 16.

Which is kind of my point; fitness is a very relative to the individual. One should be training to the "event" not the aesthetic.

Everyone gets hurt doing PT, everyone at one time or another and more often than not I find it's from lack of recovery time from the event or training time to the event.

I understood Chum's point clearly indeed and I agree; however I'd argue that level of fitness is relative to the individual.

Sure I can suck up an 8 mile LSD but I have to do that and preform aftwerwards otherwise "I" am not fit.

My wife on the other hand when she musters a quarter mile and is able to continue doing her thing well that's pretty stellar in my opinion.

I really didn't communicate that well though.

i can prob run a little faster, cycle no farther, and also like beer. but im 5'9" @ 140.

Best I ever did was 1.5 miles in 9:45. But that was 10 yrs and 30 lbs ago. :p

BMI is mostly useless though.

A vast majority in the 'obese' range are like the cartoon on the right...

A minority (very, very small minority) are like the cartoon on the left...

So something does need to be done about the problem. What? Not sure. I don't think banning sweets or such will work, but have you been to Alabama or Georgia lately? Go to a mall there and tell me we as a society don't have a problem.

You are flat out wrong. Nothing needs to be done about the problem. The problem will sort itself out in time. Besides, being fat isn't even really a problem. Its a lifestyle choice. If you are going to discriminate against them. You better be prepared to discriminate against anyone who makes unhealthy choices. As well as those with dangerous activities such as riding motorcycles. As they are costing the rest of the public more in health care bills. :p

Your argument is so ridiculous its not funny. "we need to do something" Yet you have no idea what that something is. The thought of banning/rationing/taxing any food/drink because it is fattening is beyond ridiculous.

Lets put a 'fat tax' on stuff like beer, burgers and ice cream. Lets put a scale at the door of fast food joints like McDonalds. You have to weigh under 'this' amount to get in. Lets pass a law limiting size of meals, no more supersize. No seconds for fatties otherwise jail time for server and fatty. Lets pass a law having exercise equipment at entrances to all restaurants. Cant get in without a half hour on the machines. Fatties have to spend one hour.

Lets create a special police force to enforce all these new rules. We will dress them in Nazi uniforms and call them the fatty police. Build concentration camps for fatty law breakers.

Is this the word you want to live in?

We do - we limit smoking in public places...and even in private homes/property. We also tax the hell out of smokes and alcohol.

We also have helmet and seatbelt laws

There is nothing wrong (for example) for charging a morbidly obese person 2X airfare because they take up 2 seats (provided they get 2X mileage)...

or even offering discounted insurance (or other incentives) to get healthy.

This is the world we live in - I'm not sure where you're coming from

Yea, but there are quite a few who are kinda 'inbetween' those two (I think I'm inbetween there somewhere).. which I think is a significant amount... who would match the BMI, but look nothing close to either and which "I don't think" is necessarily unhealthy (nor overweight or obese).

I think that if there is a considerable amount of people that a generalized assessment doesn't fit, then that assessment needs to be recalibrated (with other variables.)

Good point.

First...it'd be nice to have a relatively clear definition of what 'healthy' actually is. We agree the BMI calculation as a sole source has potential to be wonky.

We may not agree and what 'healthy' actually is, however...

I think BMI, in the higher ranges, should raise a flag that an individual needs a 'closer look'....

Just like anyone whose Cholesterol is above 200 would.

:)

Tell all the fatties to lay off the chunky chews

I agree - we may not have the same notes on what Healthy means. Heck I couldn't even tell you what I think Healthy means.

I just have an idea of what I don't consider to be Unhealthy. Perhaps my brain needs a workout.

From a Darwinian point of view, perhaps. But not before it bankrupts medicare, again making it my problem.

And spare me the theatrics - You're taking a small bit of what I'm saying and exaggerating it to the extreme in a bit of dramatic yet misguided attempt at reducto ad absurdum.

The thought of banning/rationing/taxing any food/drink because it is fattening is beyond ridiculous.

Show me where I said that.

I'm not suggesting anything of the sort of draconian measures you mentioned. It could be simply better education. Calm down, FFS.

With the Fat Acceptance movement going full steam I do not believe America will slim down anytime soon.

BMI is really good because it is easy to measure and you only get bad results with body builders. Pinch tests are a good way to get body fat %. Any electric body fat devices are going to be inaccurate.

I'm calm as a cucumber. Don't ever mistake me using adult language as being upset. :teeth

That is just it, you are just ranting against fat people without making a single suggestion how to 'fix' them. As if they need fixing. Better education how? Fatties already know its not healthy being overweight. Do you think they are stupid?

You sound like those annoying people who go up to motorcyclists they don't know, just to tell them how dangerous motorcycles are. "Really, these things are dangerous. Holy shit, I will never ride it again!"

There already is plenty of education about health in school. Everyone takes GYM and health ed classes. Fatties get it from work, insurance companies, their friends. They even get it from those that count, their doctors.

What more can be done about education? Are you talking manditory fat camps to make sure they hear it all over again and again?

Wow.. Some incorrect assumptions here.

And wow... Some noise here. As chim said ,'[he] don't know where you're coming from '

So what if some people are fat. Mind your fucking business.

Everyone has their thing that they like. For some its food. Healthy unhealthy, it doesn't fucking matter. What matters is letting people decide for themselves. A thing called freedom.

Cheap plentiful meat/food is one of the things that makes this country great.

I think that your missing the point. The junk food market is not free. It is government subsidized with public money and it is causing a negative effect to all people if the form of high healthcare cost and overall making America weak and noncompetitive.

People want to be free of useless taxes right?

Let the junk food market be 'free' and the economics or 'right priced' junk food might lower healthcare costs, which would probably save some American jobs.

People can still make there own lifestyle choices, but in terms of eating junk food they are not going to do it on the public dollar. That is my proposition.

You want to penalize overweight people. OK. Lets also make it, that if you smoke, or drink, you don't get medical insurance, because it will make everyone else's rate go up, when your liver dies, or you get COPD or lung cancer, or even "medical marijuana (what a joke, tell that to my friends that have COPD from smoking weed for 30 years) is going to have it's negative effects. Since you choose to do that, it's your own fault when shit starts to die off, same as being fat, but I guess since most people have themselves convinced that they can't live without their liquor or their cigarettes, it shouldn't include them. Because they aren't as bad as those fatties. What about people with AIDS? For some, their lifestyle got them where they are right now, dying of AIDS, since they had a choice not to do that, should we cut off all government plans that help them too?

Where does it all end? Who makes the decision who gets what?

And I'm not even going to bring up the Illegal fucking Aliens (not much, anyway).

I'm not trolling. You said maybe better education.

Better education how? A second gym class? A second health ed class?

Gym and health were the two most worthless classes in school. You didn't really get much exercise and you didn't learn much about anything (at least in the Bible Belt I grew up in)
