Old Race Photos

Back to some old bikes & racers, Spencer on the 2-stroke triple and Honda's 4-stroke AMA Racer (RCB1000?)

Unobtainable street bikes, 1980's style... although the CB1100R belonged to a friend of mine. He also had a Hailwood Replica that was truly awesome.

these are great! you got my mojo for starting this out w/ some great photos!

One more I meant to post.

I have boxes of this stuff, and anyone will who knows me will tell you I'm not exactly the most organized person, so I'll dig around some more and see what I can find.

I missed a couple GP's ('89 I was in Europe, but I did see it on TV there, '91 a cousin had the audacity to get married the same day as the GP, & they didn't have one in 92) when they were here, figuring they'll have many, many more. WON'T make that mistake again!

Wayne Gradner never had good luck at Laguna, and 1990 was a particularly bad year for crashes, the race was red flagged at least once, maybe twice.

But Magee had the worst of it. This red flagged the race, and feared the worst when we saw it, but I think he was relatively ok when he came to. This again was in 1990. I think he was also the rider that hit Bubba Shobert and ended his career in '89.

Cool pic of Gardner...busted his leg up pretty good from what I remember.. and The Bubba deal was a tradgedy.. :sad

The track has a lot more run off in turn 6 now.. turn two used to be a wicked fast lefty with a hillside right there..:wow

I have ridden the track in all of the configurations..and the current is the safefest by far..but I think the MotoGP guys who have never seen it will be freaked..a little and think it is not safe..we'll see.

MORE!

And no Rick those are not my bell bottoms..:laughing

Here is my son and I at the first GP..tired guy he was..and it was blazing hot too..

:smoking

Hold the phone... what bikes are the ones in the top photo, there? RZ500's?

Deacon, yes, but I think these 2 were the even rarer aluminum framed RZ-R's.

Budman, I e-mailed you.

Roberts came out of retirement for one last ride in front of the home crowd in 1985. I went out to the races on crutches because I broke my leg in a bicycle accident just before graduating from UCSB, so this was really the best I could do.
