I would still guess it came out partly because of noise.

I don't know what to say to get the loud pipe loving riders to understand that having a loud pipe angers the non riding public.

They vote too, and are happy to see motorcyclists get regulated.

if you need an exhaust I can put you in touch with a dealer in AZ. he'll be able to get it to you.

EPA is fucking with KTM on the maps as well. on KTM akra mapps you can no longer turn off the O2 sensor. so it runs like shit at low load/speed.

Thanks 4d. I've got a jet kit (Factory Pro), a set of sprockets and a chain, going to be pipes and tires in the next couple of weeks, time to park it for a day or 2 and do some work.
 
annoying... but not surprising. I wish they weren't putting so much pressure on the shops for shit that the owner does. I will always think they should just come up with a road side test, make it MUCH more expensive than just the $25 fix it ticket and be done with the whole farce. When people start seeing $400 tickets for noise violations you'll start seeing people buying proper exhausts. :x

Edit: that does pose a question... what if a bike comes in for repairs and has an illegal pipe on it? Depending on the age is it grandfathered? Will shops be required to do anything if it is newer and falls within the new time frame?

is that a cat on the Leo or a resonator? Cats tend to be big and heavy, part of why stock exhausts are so big/heavy.

Pretty much this. When people act without regard for others in society, legislators end up stepping in. You can't legislate common sense or common courtesy, so you end up with Drakonian laws. The blame is not on legislators but on people that give the :twofinger to their neighbors by running douchy pipes.

Whether noise, emissions and what have you, Dan is on to something here. I doubt this legislation would've ever passed if we had kept our stock pipes and enjoy the ride more quietly.

Up to a point. How many times have you met someone who's demeanor towards you changed negatively when they found out you rode a motorcycle? There are a lot of people out there that don't like motorcycles one bit. A quiet bike or a not so quiet bike, makes no difference to them. Remember, we are the minority, I assume more people don't like us, for our form of transport, than do like us.

I wouldn't doubt if they try to legislate us out of existence altogether, at some point down the road.

And look at the Harley Crowd. More straight pipes than mufflers going on there, and I believe that is the strongest selling genre out there at the moment. I live a block for Santa Maria H-D Triumph Kawasaki. More straight pipe Harleys than not. On warm, sunny weekend, the only time many of them ride, it's constant noise. It doesn't really bother me, my old Ducati is pretty loud too, I'm used to it. That isn't going to change, and those are the guys buying bikes, middle age, cruiser types, and loud pipes go along with the image.

I have a trick method, for Ya. And you can do it yourself (because your a Machinist). And the end result is the best power, and deepest (doesn't hurt ears) note of any exhaust You could have. I'm not describing this, over the internet, though...Visit me for a ride over Ebbetts Pass, And I'll tell Ya :thumbup

Absolutely there is bias against motorcyclists by the non-riding public. While some of this is completely baseless, most people I've talked to that have a negative reaction claim it's because:

1) they've had a friend or loved one injured in a moto crash
2) they've had one (or many) negative encounters with motorcyclists. This can include loud pipes, aggressive lane splitting/passing in inappropriate places, encountering oncoming riders over the DY, etc.

My point is, let's not pretend to be innocent victims here. We do this to ourselves, by and large.

Loud pipes 'can' be annoying but not once have I ever been asked by a civilian in conversation "do you have loud pipes". It's always "you don't ride between cars do you?". Lanesharing is perfectly legal but it annoys way more people than pipes do as does hauling ass in the hills.

This much is true.

I've been up on the hill (Hwy 9), when 10 guys going the other way, going way, way, way too fast come booking around a turn, everyone dragging knee, which I'm sure scares the blue hairs and everyone else, and I'm hoping they don't lose the front and come across and take me out too. That isn't going to stop. It was going on 25 years ago when I lived up north, it was going on every times I've gone up there since.

A lot of what happens in motorcycle legislation is self inflicted.

Dunno. Very few people are born disliking something. Usually is from an unpleasant experience like a biker rode over your dog, your dad died riding a bike, you get cut in traffic all the time by bikes, the biker next door would frighten your kid sister, etc. Look at the effects of cumulative head injuries in the NFL, the strikes, the tax-funded stadiums, etc, and perception of people against football. OTOH, nobody wants to outlaw the girlscouts and their delicious cookies.

I think we bring a lot of grief upon ourselves. IMHO.

can you use the O2 input with the stock electronics, or was the stocker replaced with a Bazzaz or whatever...
