There is a reason Mazda dropped it.but cylinder deactivation is made for, better MPG, so if you want that, you should get that.
Mazda is dropping cylinder deactivation primarily due to customer complaints about a jerky and obtrusive driving experience, potential long-term reliability concerns, and a limited fuel-saving benefit on smaller engines. The system can cause noticeable jolts when switching between two and four cylinders, and some models even faced recalls due to component failure related to the technology.
Key reasons for dropping the technology
- Jerky driving experience: Many drivers have reported a noticeable and annoying sensation when the system engages or disengages, feeling like an abrupt change in acceleration or a "bump".
- Reliability concerns: There are long-term concerns that cylinder deactivation can impact engine longevity, with some models even being recalled for issues related to the system, such as components misaligning and damaging the engine.
- Limited fuel-saving: In smaller four-cylinder engines, the fuel-saving potential of cylinder deactivation is relatively small compared to larger engines.
- Component failure: In some cases, the hydraulic valve clearance adjuster, which is part of the cylinder deactivation system, has malfunctioned, leading to more serious engine component issues.
- Customer feedback: The combination of the jerky feel and potential reliability issues has led to negative customer feedback and a desire for its removal.
My wife's Turbo driving to Ashland Oregon and back does get near 30 mpg with four people and luggage.Thank you. Just figuring things out. Want to replace the jeep but leery of buying from non original owners.
And shorter engine life is just an added bonus.but cylinder deactivation is made for, better MPG, so if you want that, you should get that.
i love calling in muni drivers. there’s a man who drives the 22 line and i love him. always smiling, kind, announcing stops, etc. i’ve called him in like three times.

"met" (saw) the samedriver today... then I checked:
But those not the mpg reasons you were complaining aboutThere is a reason Mazda dropped it.
Yeah I guess I was assuming Toyota engines. Not Mazda hahaAnd shorter engine life is just an added bonus.
I'll take reliability over 2 extra mpg.Yeah I guess I was assuming Toyota engines. Not Mazda haha
What's true is true however, I said it. It's "designed", imagined, etc for the better mpg. It's probably coming from Europe / Eco requirements.
It could definitely be a benefit in America. So much three minutes red lights so much stop and go
But, I guess people both want the power AND the MPG
Walking with your car in the shop is infinity miles per gallon !!!!I'll take reliability over 2 extra mpg.
Great car but poor mpg but as we don't put more than 3000 miles on it a year
I think Mazda was just ensuring continued dealership repairs support with that one.. perhaps.Walking with your car in the shop is infinity miles per gallon !!!!
yuck!!!!Just had a car come in with a blown engine electronics fuse. Replaced the fuse which led me to find out the cylinder 6 ignition coil was shorted. My throat is sore from the smoke now![]()
I haven't done it since.that certainly sounds like a bad experience!
