Yo guys !

First thread, and not a very cool one.
My Ducati Monster 620 (2002 version, 32K miles) doesn't go faster than 70mph!! :(

I just got the bike and I'm a new rider so I was riding slow and not long trips on the beginning, so as I'm in town I rode mainly in town the first week.

But then taking the Skyline Bv, I noticed that the bike doesn't go faster than 70mph. And at full throttle in 2nd gear, when I want to pass someone going at 40-50mph... It takes me a fucking eternity... :deadhorse

The bike has no hesitation and runs fines at every rev. It's just about the REAL speed. So that sounds weird, kind of like a power limitation.

Spark plugs are new (and the ones recommended by Ducati), coils and cables are good.

Want your thoughts on that and recommandations for finding the good mecanics people here and not the big commercial dealerships, I don't believe in them.

Had the exact same bike and it had NO problem breaking the ton. No offense, but how big a boy are ya? Other than weighing 400 pounds, if it runs perfect and revs perfect I'd say your clutch is slipping.
 
How's the air filter?
New fuel filter wouldn't hurt.
When was the last valve adjustment?

Is it running on both cylinders? Easy way to check is to see if both exhaust pipes heat up at the same rate. Check them as close to the engine heads as you can.

You may be riding around on a Ducati 310 monster.

I once did a service on a guy's 748. Informed him he had a broken belt and bent valves on the horizontal cylinder. He rode it that way for I think 6 months! After repaired he came back all scared because of the extra power.:thumbup

- @Stix Haha ! I'm only about 160 pounds ! Thanks though, that was the first thing to check ! Seriously, I think the clutch hypothesis makes sense.

- @423yjl and @mototireguy : 3 months and less than 1K miles ago, Desmoto did a lot of work on the bike including

- new air filter
- fuel tank cleaning
- new fuel filter
- new belts
- new spark plugs
- new chain+sprokets
- oil + filter change


- @motomania2007 So here's what I did : coming back from a short ride, I put a beautiful peace of beef on each exhaust pipes. And both at the same time ended up a very good medium-well ! :bbq
So I think we're good on that one !
More seriously, they felt the same heat touching it quickly as close possible to the engine. Thanks for the tip ;)

I also checked the coils, looks good, but I'd like to find a Ohm meter to precisely check the coil are working fine.

-> BUT, the CLUTCH really makes sense guys. Because I also feel some little "hic-hic-hic" when I'm in 1st gear and just "clutch speed"
(don't know the english word for it, the speed when you fully release the clutch but don't move the throttle)

Like I told you, I am 70% sure it's a clutch slipping issue :).

Take a look at the exhaust pipes where they meet behind the engine and in front of the rear tire. Both pipes go into a collector, then back out to the exhaust pipes. Once you're past the collector, the temperature of the left and right cans has nothing at all to do with the temperature coming out of the cylinders. Just trying to clear that one thing up for you. :nerd

The way I've easily noticed a clutch that is starting to slip, is to put it up in a higher gear while going slow, then start hard acceleration. You will hear the engine rapidly increasing in revs while you aren't really moving that much quicker.

Try going about 40 and put it in 5th, and then wack the throttle. See if the acceleration and what you hear or see on the tack seem to move together, or if the tack increases quickly while the bike does not.

Very used clutch plates

Hi guys,

So I guess this means the clutch is really dead...

Question now is, what to use ?
- Barnett clutch plates = $150
- Ducati clutch plates = $300

Some guys don't recommend Barnett at all, because the new Barnett clutch plates lasted only 1 or 2K miles... but it was okay for some others. And the original Ducati ones are very more expensive.

What about your experience guys ? Particularly Monster riders

I have an open clutch on mine so it's different, and i tried the Barnett. After about 700 miles it started to make a loud squeal when starting from a stop. drove me nuts, so put in OEM. also have heard some people do fine with the Barnett but I didn't
 
Quick question, do you always work on your bike/clutch in that room? My wife would kill me!
 
Glad you found the culprit. I have a 2006 Multistrada 620 which is the same engine. My stock clutch is approaching 20k miles. I wouldn't hesitate on another Ducati branded clutch knowing it'll last the same mileage or more. Btw I don't do wheelies or burnouts. Don't know how anyway. :ride

HAHAHA David ! I work in the garage, I just came here in the apartment for the lights, otherwise, no parts left in the bathroom ! ^^
(and there is usually no space left for other product than cosmetic & makeup products so I couldn't bring a bike engine there anyway !)

Well, I finally hope it's the only reason why the bike is not faster than my grand'ma with her bicycle. I'll give a feedback once it's replaced.
