Purchased my first bottle of Scotch! (extreme whisky thread)

Finally tried some Highland park 12, it was a lot peatier than I expected.

On "Worth it" they have $208 cocktails (Served in $500 glasses) which have Highland Park 18 as the base.

My son got me a bottle of Highland Park 18 when he went to Scotland years ago - I nursed that bottle for years! The 12 yo is nice, but as you say it's a bit peaty. But then most of the Island offerings are heavy on the peat. But I was really surprised by the Highland Park Magnus - very light! If you concentrate you can pick up the peat, but more in the forefront is a sweet honey and vanilla flavor. Expect to pay between $35 and $40 for a bottle.

I've been on a bit of a Rye kick lately.

This stuff is liquid magic:

If you're not down for a hundred bucks for a bottle, they have it at Hardwater

WP is good, but it's also kind of a scam. It's just rebottled, relabeled Canadian rye. You can't have 12-year rye coming from a company that's not even been operating for 10 years.

For a great rye, you should check out Wild Turkey 101. I know you are thinking, "Wild Turkey wtf?!?" But trust me, it's better than WP, it's not a marketing scam, and it's less than 1/2 the price.

At that price point, I don't think you can beat Rittenhouse. $24 and it's a very solid rye.

:laughing "Solid." My mistake was being a somewhat finer-esque bourbon drinker and then trying Rittenhouse. I wanted to be cool like some speakeasy patron and bought a bottle. Never could finish it... It was like drinking gas laced with bleach, with a spoonful of ground cinnamon chaser.

Interesting take. First time I've heard of a negative opinion of Rittenhouse. But with rye it's common to get fusel alcohol, solvent, ester, and other flavors, which can make certain ryes unpalatable for some folks, and OK for others. Interestingly, rum is also hit and miss like this and also because of esters and fusel alcohols, but other whiskeys like bourbon or scotch rarely are so polarizing.

It just wasn't my thing and I really wanted to like it. For perspective, at the time I was a not-quite-daily Eagle Rare drinker, which, IMO, is still one of the best bang for the buck bourbons.

Damn. Good to know.

You're reading my mail. Although I prefer the 40%abv.

Also, not a Rittenhouse fan...

currently drinking a 18 year macallen. its pretty good.

the 18 year tomatin is right up there and a bit less expensive..

my preference is to add a little bit of water to open it up. always spring water. always in a glencairn glass

Did whiskies of the world last year. Was very interesting and eye openinig. Learned that just because a scotch is 25 years old, doesn’t mean it will be “better”. Like most wine and spirits it is all subjective.

I personally found out that my favorite macallan 12. I tried the 25 and didn’t care for it. A few other brands I liked other dates like the 18 or maybe the 25. Bottom line: there is no rhyme or reason and just because something costs more doesn’t mean it is “better”.

However! The older scotches do evaporate more water off giving a different flavor, and of course more time in the barrels makes them taste different.

Basically if you like the profile of an older whisky or scotch, hone in on it, cause it really can’t remain the same..

very true..

i was big on the 12 year macallen and pretty much stuck with it. the 18 is good dont get me wrong and is a step up from the 12...good or not is on the drinker. . my scottish neighbor literally new the year and maker before i told him what it was when i gave him some...if that means anything.

again throwing out some praise for tomatin 18. i can get a bottle for right at 100 bucks and i think its a really nice scotch.

ive been eyeing a bottle of 12 year macallen at bevmo for 50 bucks, but my local wine/specialty store is saying i cant go back now. and i have to trust him at this point. he has steered me away from some expensive wine for much more reasonable priced, very nice wine. if it matters the latest wine he recommended was from Trentadue, 2012 merlot. 20 bucks or so, and pretty good.

If you like Macallan 12 but want to step it up a little bit, try Aberlour 12 Non Chill Filtered if you can find it. Glendronach 12 and Glenfarclas 12 are two other sherry-heavy Scotches that you might be interested in.
