R1200RT-P Touring Conversion/Mods Question Thread!

Updating as I made some changes to my bike. Removed all the lights and code 3 box (and sold them to Sabian :p) and still trying to completely solve the starting issue.

One strange thing I noticed while removing stuff is that there is a little puff of smoke off one of the bolts connecting the metal plate the code 3 box was on to the frame, which also appears to have a ground for the police wiring harness attached to it. I moved the ground directly to the frame bolt and the smoking seemed to go away. The bike seems to crank better, though still gets sluggish if I try to restart after riding for a while. Hasn't failed yet though since I moved that ground. My guess is all my starting problems are ground related.

As already mentioned, The sluggish cranking when hot could be the starter dragging and needing either disassembly, cleaning if you have the time.
You can also get an aftermarket starter for pretty cheap.
These are available from Tucker Rocky thru your local motorcycle shop.
Buying face to face would be helpful vs online should there be a warranty issue down the line. I think the warranty is 1 year.

I already swapped starters with my other RT which starts fine and the problem persists. It's not the starter.

Just an update for my bike. Been having my starting problem as usual. It starts fine in the morning, but after an hour of freeway riding if I stop for gas it will not start back up right away.

I tested the voltage just before trying to start and it was 13.1 volts. When cranking it drops to about 7 or 8 volts. If I shut it off and wait a few minutes, it will usually crank over at that point.

Still looking for any help or ideas you have before I drop the money to take it to a dealer.

This will sound dumb, but... pull up the seat and make sure the battery terminals are tight.
