RC390 Overheated. Won't start.

Update:

SBM has said KTM has authorized all my repairs, despite the fact it's an obvious race bike (which they expressed over the phone), and will perform the following:

- Head gasket repair
- Valvetrain inspection & adjustment
- Bottom end bearing inspections
- Clutch basket inspection
- Water pump inspection
- Starter switch replacement
- Firmware update
- Oil change
- Coolant change & bleed

So far, experience has been pretty easy...

There was an article in one of the regular moto mags in which KTM will be warranty repairing head gaskets on these things...Apparently Ari Henning smoked his little 390 during a long term test and KTM is a little red faced.

Yeah... I fully blame this on him, that punk was pitted next to me at AFM up at Sonoma and first thing he asked me was how the head gasket was doing and I said just fine thank you, and to not put that evil on me!

Shenanagins I say

Quick update! Almost 2 months to the day, bike is ready to pick up from SBM.

Slightly concerning was that they checked the head and the deck for flatness and neither was warped, which makes me wonder why it failed in the first place. I'm not overly-concerned for the new engine since there's a new head in there, but still curious why that happened.

Rick - your bike still running?

Heh, nope!
36 days and counting on the most recent warranty issue for a total of 128/301 days broken down (42.5%). I asked KTM North America officially for a buy back last week. It'll probably take a month before I have an update on that process.

I'm glad yours is back though! Hopefully you're done with having any issues with yours!

In case it comes up:

The warranty period will be extended for the number of whole days that the
product has been out of the buyer's hands for warranty repairs.

Rick, read through all of your "Warranty Woes" page on your website. Good on you for keeping such a fastidious record of your problems. My first rc390 was entirely problem free but my second has had a smattering of annoyances out of the box. I think I might imitate your format.

Day 1 / 12 mi:
- Sidestand sensor fault - engine turned off in traffic. Could not replicate the problem when I pulled into my driveway. Noticed the sidestand wiring was loose so I neatened it up within the fairing/frame. Have never had the problem again.
- Throttle cable/housing was so tight out of the factory that turning the steering all the way to one side (I think the left) actuated the throttle. Took it to Scuderia and they re-routed the whole thing to fix the problem.
- Shifter pedal was improperly calibrated, would prevent me from going from 2nd to 1st or N to 1st without a tremendous amount of force. Scuderia fixed.

30 days / 1,000mi
- Engine warning lamp came on in the middle of a long day of riding. Parked, but the engine lamp never gave any sort of flashing signal to let me know what was wrong. Rode all the way home with the engine lamp on. Gave it a rest and when I restarted a few hours later the engine warning was gone.

40 days / 1,400 mi
- Engine lamp came on again during a ride. Rode about 50 mi home, turned the bike off in my driveway, turned it back on and the lamp was gone. Same as before, no indication of why the lamp went on and have been unable to replicate it.

Since then at 1500mi, haven't had a hitch, but hoping my head gasket doesn't blow and my radiator doesn't leak...
