Rent Dropping

I am not taking into consideration kids and I am aware but that was your decision to have them :x

IF I were to have a kid my premium would adjust from $25.61 a month to $182.59. My employer would pay $1165.15. IF I were to add my wife it would jump to $241.81 and IF I were to be on a family plan, $39.77. This is for the cadillac full coverage $0 out of pocket program at kaiser, which includes vision (at kaiser) and soon to be dental (at kaiser)

Again, I would look to your seat cost and not your salary to determine if your company is compensating you appropriately.

How big is the company you work for? We have about 40 people. In Santa Cruz county there is no provider but anthem. Kaiser is supposed to be coming and we, everyone I work with including the boss, are hopeful that they will provide some competition and more cost effective plans. I'm not holding my breath tho. I'm glad you have a good deal I just think its really, really, rare.

yeah, we're about 1500 employees now (500 when I started). But we are in the healthcare space and truly value solid health benefits.

HEY-YO :laughing

I pay $62/week, for the highest "A" plan they offer (Anthem Blue Shield). My employer pays 100% for the base plan, which my wife has (she also works there, all our eggs in one basket I suppose. We'd probably get our unemployment checks on the same day if something goes south). $4500/year deductible. No co-pay for in-plan doctors and hospitals. Which mine are. It could be worse.

Sounds very reasonable to me. I think the deductible is a bit high but for what you are paying per week I think it's ok. If I could cut my costs in half, $500 per month for myself and the family, and had a $3k deductible, I would be a very happy man. I would also happily pump the other $500 a month I'm spending now on insurance back into the economy in the form of retirement savings (IRA) and fun stuff.

Our economy will ROAR when middle class people like me have a bit more to spend on things other than housing and insurance.

Crazy how much people are paying for medical insurance and deductibles.
If I was spending over 12000 after tax dollars per year on medical it would become my #1 issue when casting a vote.

We'll I did vote for Bernie in the primary.

Incidentally I don't take these articles as gospel. I don't know what the future holds. The past does not predict the future of course. I just see trends and over time, rent never really takes a dive unless demand goes way down, and right now the Bay Area is still doing quite well.

I remember when I moved here in 2007 I paid $1500 for a shared house with 1 roommate...backyard, two rooms for me, huge kitchen, shared 1 parking garage with small driveway...in NOE VALLEY. Ah the days. Went up to $1600 after 4 years...I never had a lease I just trusted my roommate who was and still is the most honest person ever.

Data point: Tri-valley area single family housing rental rates seem to have peaked, and inventory is up a bit. Still strong, but cracks are showing.

It really sucks if you're self-employed. Last year I paid $325/month for myself for a crappy plan with a $5500 deductible. The new plan they're offering me this year with an even higher deducible will be $393 (21% increase). So I get to pay more for less, to the tune of about $5k a year.

If I opt for the shittiest insurance offered over any provider or type, it will still cost me about $280/month.

I hope someone can fix this shit because it's getting out of control. I think it's great that my father, who has a lot of pre-existing stuff, can get insurance, and my MIL, who never had insurance in her life just had a cancerous tumor removed because of ACA. I don't pretend to have the answer but I hope someone can fix soon.

To tie back into this thread, it's getting to a point where you can either fund your retirement or have insurance, but you can't do both.

I agree that something needs to be done. Although most of us seem to have some sort of insurance, and your mother in law and father can find medical insurance, personally, I don't know anyone that has been helped by the ACA. I do know many people that have nearly been priced out of the market though. Not too many other places where the insurance industry writes their own rules.
