Have any athletes and/or countries just said straight up... I/we are not going to that shit show and pulled out completely?

A bunch of the top golfers have withdrawn.

Rory Mc Ilroy, Jason Day. They especially dont give a damn about an Olympic medal.

I have yet to see any coverage on olympic sailing ever, after all these years.

But we do get ol' Bob with all the USOC politically connected back story. Those athletes that are deemed photogenic with tear jerking back stories get coverage to swell the USOC coffers for another 4 years.

IOC member Anita DeFrantz was on "Mike &Mike" this morning, and it was rather disturbing to listen to her deflect responsibility from herself and the IOC for this shit-show...

I seriously will not cry if these are the Olympics that destroy the IOC. (BTW, these are the games that could've been in Chicago if Oprah and Obama had their way... :laughing)

I love both sailing and archery.

I plan to watch neither one. In general, I'm not a huge fan of the summer olympics (winter is just so, so much better), but in this particular case, I'm not going to support corruption and broken promises with my viewership.

To hell with Rio 2016.

Well, this is disgusting...
Rio's waters so full of human sewage, Olympic swimmers told to keep their mouths closed
A battery of tests by government and independent scientists recently revealed that seven years of cleanup attempts have done little to disinfect the petri dish of Guanabara Bay. The New York Times reports that viruses that cause diarrhea are in the waters, as well as a "superbacteria that can be fatal to people with weakened immune systems."

As a result, scientists have advised Olympians interacting with the bay to keep their mouths closed to avoid ingesting the water.

Scientists say that feces from a nearby hospital and municipal sewage plant pours into the water untreated. And if that doesn't make your lunch rise in your throat, don't forget that dead bodies — animal and human — are found floating in the bay with upsetting regularity.
Brazil is a large country, there are plenty of places they could have held the Olympics that would have been much better places. I guess the 'money' people had all of the say on where it would be...in a place that was convenient and projected to be most profitable for them when they selected the location.

Sounds like those scientists should be advising the athletes to go the fuck home.

This just keeps getting better and better....

Australian Olympic team robbed during fire evacuation at Olympic Village
Australian Olympic team members were forced to evacuate their lodgings on Friday at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics after a small fire in a basement parking area caused smoke to fill the stairwells.
...
"The stairwells filled with smoke, but the fire was confined to the carpark and no one was injured," Tancred said in a statement.

Upon their return, Australian 9 News reports that they discovered three laptops and other personal belongings had been taken. The Australian Olympic Committee has reportedly added security guards to their building.

On a micro scale, I'll enjoy the Olympics as I always do. Track/field, swimming, badminton, etc. are fun to watch (and a few others).

More long-term, I hope poor/corrupt countries (especially) set aside notions of national pride and think hard about applying to host. It seems like most host cities/governments lose money, and the facilities are often left to rot.

I'm guessing much of Brazil is apprehensive and perhaps regrets hosting this and the last world cup (especially that surrender to Germany).
