RZ350NC2 Resto Mod

Thanks for all the replies and feedback.

Has anybody used these guys for brake caliper and master cylinder rebuild parts, mostly O-rings at the moment?

Brake Crafters

https://www.brakecrafters.com/collections/1994-yamaha-fzr600/products/1990-1999-yamaha-fzr600-front-brake-caliper-new-seal-kit

I can get everything I need from one source. Some things are competitively priced with Yamaha and/or aftermarket, some a little less.

I have no experience, but thought I'd use up band width to mention that I've had good results using Yambits for similar items.

Thanks Julian. I have looked at their site and yes, they have lots of stuff I need. I will be ordering some from them. But on the RZ forums it seems Yambits is a bit hit or miss with their products. Plus I was trying to land some stuff here soon so I can start on some rebuilding. Yambits replied to my email saying deliveries are typically 2 - 3 weeks out. Brake Crafters is even more of an unknown but I seem to remember on here somewhere that they are good.

...But on the RZ forums...

But, but, but... those forums aren't BARF:shame

If you need a rebuild kit right away, how about AllBallRacing? I've used their caliper kits for other bikes with good results. They do have an RZ kit for the rear. (not sure why they have the rear but not the front:dunno )https://www.allballsracing.com/18-3204.html

Removed tires off wheels and cleaned wheels to handoff to polisher.

Front wheel looks beautiful and could be used without repaint. Rear wheel paint doesn’t match the front, it’s kind of darker and the paint color is very uneven.

I pulled out one of the wheels removed from my yellow bike and cleaned a spot on it. These are decent wheels but the gold on these wheels looks somewhat faded. So I will paint the original wheels after polish.

Ordered caliper seals and master cylinder rebuild kits from Brake Crafters.

Made a list of parts to order from NORBO. The most bizarre e-commerce site you have ever seen. He has many OEM parts and cool blingy parts. I ordered from him in the past and it works out albeit a bit painful. Waiting for email response from him. His response

“Best cheapest and safest was to ship is if you just pay for the parts I’ll box up and give you the box info and you arrange pick up and send me the label and customs to print of and put on box then you can insure and track your side” Pay for a bunch of stuff and then find out it is cost prohibitive. Not this time. I think I will order elsewhere. Yambits and OEM.

Yesterday since I had the Nomar out I changed the rear tire on the 500. Today I will do the front and possibly replace both tires on the Thrasher 350. Done.

Bonus pics. New tires on the 500 and “new” take offs on the thrasher bike.

Brake Crafters parts arrived a day or two ago. I can disassemble, refinish, then rebuild calipers and MC’s.

Wheel bearings arrived a day or two ago. Need to get wheels, foot rest brackets, and forks to the polisher. But I need to take the forks apart first.

Emailed a painter I’ve used before yesterday.

Voice messaged a painter a friend has used.

Need to order more parts...

Yambits replied to two previous emails right away. I’ve emailed 3 more times over the last several days with one last question and radio silence. C’mon people, reply so I can order parts.

I think the www connected us all for this type of project. I think Covid has now broken it. Weird times.

Ordered Mike XS PD valves 27-1086 Should be an interesting installation.

11/6/21

Disassembled forks including taking inner rod out of damping rod in preparation for mod for emulator install. Ordered brazing rod for mod.

Emailed photos of 2 sets of body work to the painter. For this bike and another one. Waiting for an estimate on Monday hopefully.

No stone left unturned. Thank for the reports.

11/7/21

Drilled the new holes and opened up holes in the damping rods.

Picked up some MappPro at Home Depot. I’ll have to test it on some steel and see if it will get hot enough to flow a brazing rod and plug holes.

On another bike took one FZR600 caliper off and disassembled it to change out seals. I had to order CRC Brakleen online and it will be here Tuesday or Wednesday. The can that I had stopped spraying. I want to flush these calipers real good before reassembling.

Not much production this week. In fact, kind of a disappointing week.

Yambits. I sent my fourth email to them over the last few weeks with some simple questions to answer before I make an order. THEY STILL HAVE NOT REPLIED. I am concerned about placing an order with them now.

The polishing guy did not respond to my latest message so I think he has faded out. I will have to polish the wheels and other parts myself. Sanding and polishing aluminum is sucky work.

Paint estimate came in higher than I think is worth putting into this motorcycle. More than likely I will reassemble the bike with the painted parts as is.

I am waiting for the powder coater to call me to come and pick up the parts I dropped off on 10/29. At that time he said a week and ½. It’s been two weeks.

Fork emulators arrived. I need to braze the damping rods. Should be fun.

I rebuilt these FZR600 front calipers on another bike. They were dragging a bit.

I still have not heard back from Yambits. Fuckers. They have lots of specialty parts that I would like to order.

Front calipers are disassembled, all parts are cleaned and ready for reassembly except...I may spray bomb the cast parts. I have a feeling these calipers won’t stay on this bike so probably no powder coat for these parts.

The rear caliper has been disassembled. The finish on this unit was really good so I polished it up, installed new seals, and reassembled it. A part is done.

I started on the rear master cylinder.

The sun is supposed to come out today so I can spray bomb a few parts and cook them in the barbecue.

Friday I picked up these parts from PC.

It's fun watching your progress, Ken.
Thanks for bringing us along. :cool

Find somebody with a MIG welder to weld the damping rod holes, easy peasy
I don't think anything besides oxyacetylene is going to be able to braze

Thanks guys. augustiron the instructions specify brazing and there is even a real BARFer that has done this very thing on the same parts. But he's smarter than I am. :rolleyes

Saturday I spray bombed the front calipers and rear master cylinder. I got a bit overanxious and put them in the barbecue to cure the paint. After about 30 minutes I went and looked at the product and the paint had blistered up. Lesson learned…Let the paint cure for a day or five before barbecuing. I walnut blasted the parts and repainted them Sunday.

Also Sunday I started on the rear brake master cylinder. I was unable to finish because I don’t have proper snap ring pliers. Or stated differently, I had broken the tips off of the proper one I had some time ago. I think removing a huge snap ring out of a silencer. I had to order new snap ring pliers and it should be here Tuesday.

Today I finally decided to order a few parts from Yambits even though the A holes haven’t been returning emails. I’ve never ordered from them before. The order went through PayPal so if things go south I’m hoping their “buyer protection” will be put into play.

Assembled front calipers today.

Assembled the rear MC some time last week.

I’ve been polishing the wheels off and on. As I feared this has turned into a career. The rear wheel I wet sanded with 600 grit and then took it to the new Craftsman 1.5 HP buffer. The buffer worked very well and I was OK with the finished product. I did the same to the front wheel which I thought would polish up easier. It didn’t. It has deeper tooling groves that didn’t sand out with 600 grit and the wheel won’t polish anything close to the rear. Next I took 240 grit and wet sanded some parts of the spokes. It takes forever. And it didn't turn out well. So why not get in deeper.

tzxc75a.jpg

I got my electric DA sander out and took it to the machined grooves. It works but it’s too big and I’m going to do some damage to other parts of the wheel if I keep going. I wish the polishing dude would not have faded out. This is taking too long. But as I’ve preached to my kids for years, “anything worth doing is worth doing right”. After DA sanding.

X9X3AmQ.jpg

So a little deeper we go. I’ve ordered a 3 inch air DA and a bunch of grits of discs. It’s supposed to be here Monday. I will basically be starting over now to make them look uniform in finish.

Assembled front MC today including replacing the sight glass window.

Mini DA sander and disc arrive today so I can get back to the joyful forever job of sanding and polishing wheels soon. I fired it up and it spins and sands wood.

What, having to endure 10 hours driving in my truck with me wasn't enough? You want to double that time?:laughing

Maybe, I need to think about this (a lot). What is the drop dead registration date? I went to their site and couldn't find it.

I don't think there is a deadline on bike submissions and just because you submit a bike doesn't mean it will be accepted. I think they take submissions until they've selected enough bikes to fill the space. In the old days of the show they would take any and all bikes submitted. In recent years the show has gotten very popular and they've become very picky about what gets in. That said, you have some very nice bikes that I think would be great candidates.

Ya, good point about being in your truck for long periods of time:x
