School me: AWD, mid SUV, mid to high end, good mpg

Seems cheap?

Kind of open to this idea .
Spending less than the top of the budget will ease the pain of SF trip parking carnage and Tahoe winter abuse.

Similar cargo area to the Lexus NX, while a few inches shorter.
How is back seat room?

You should drive one before getting too excited. All the VW/Audi/Porsche TDIs that stayed on the road and got “retrofitted” seriously got their balls cut off. Yay they’re clean now. But absolutely gutless. I’ve heard a lot of reports that the mileage took a hit too.

Omg the headache to get parts for something like that? It’s already pretty hard getting parts for a Bentley or RR even just 30 years old.

He's in that thing around $20K or less.

Used Audi? Pass.
#FormerUsedAudiOwner

That's definitely the general consensus.

Holeshot, I haven't drilled into pricing for those. Just found it interesting (and compelling) that they were just $25k or less for that model/year/package when I'm comparing it to $65k new cars.
Not that that one was a particularly good deal, as there was only 1 on CL.

It does look nice and comfy, and not annoyingly gadgety. Be nice if it were CPO to score at least a couple years of warranty.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said this but let’s do it one more time.

When it comes to used European cars, if you couldn’t afford it new then you can’t afford it used. They’re that cheap for a reason…buy that 8 year old Audi/M-B/BMW and you’ll find out why it was so much cheaper than a new one.

I have a buddy with a Macan (which is like a SQ5) Turbo. Had a CPO warranty on it and had already had the usual suspects (transfer case, timing cover seal, and air suspension compressor) go bad on him. His warranty is coming to and end and he asks me if he should buy a third party warranty to extend it another 2 years for $7500. Kind of a lot for 2 years especially since the usual stuff already got done. Will it be worth it since all that stuff already went bad and got fixed he asks. I tell him, it’s not like they put new and improved parts in, it’s the same stuff that always goes bad. Absolutely buy that warranty if you want to keep that thing. I promise you you’ll get your money’s worth. About half a year later, timing cover starts leaking again (thanks VAG for using aluminum bolts to hold together critical engine parts). Engine has to come out, it’s a huge job. Would have cost him over $9k.

Which brings me to my other often spoken words. If you want to be in one of these things, buy the longest warranty available. As soon as you’re out of warranty, pull the ripcord and get out of that thing.

Copy.

Wifey was already pretty committed to stay Toyota/Lexus and no Euro.

Turns out I should listen to her considering cars too. That was one of my areas of confidence lol.

NX is a fine vehicle. Frankly, I wanted to get that for my mom five years ago. Despite that fact that I was very much a company man for Acura at the time so of course I had a killer deal for a RDX (like $9k off I believe), but it’s my mother, I’ll get her whatever she wants. She didn’t want to be too involved with going from dealer to dealer and driving cars. So I did all the legwork and checked out everything in this class, and just kind of did a PowerPoint presentation of all her choices. I was very impressed with the NX in terms of fit and finish. And I knew the reliability would be second to none. No surprise, since it was completely made in Japan. I was happier with the slightly smaller size of the NX for her. But my mom went mostly off looks and couldn’t get over the predator mouth grille of the Lexus. So she made it easy and just told me to just get her the Acura.

Nice.

We're back in Reno tomorrow and will try to swing by and spend more time looking over the NX.

We only saw one briefly as we were leaving , and they have no hybrids in stock, (didn't even know about the nx450 at the time)

So it will just be a size, comfort, and road manners look at a standard nx350.

Yeah the thread title is mid size SUVs, and the RX definitely is in the size class, which is why is initially didn’t suggest the baby brother. NX is probably more in the compact SUV segment. Acura RDX kind of straddles in between the size classes it seems and MDX goes between mid and large size. But NX is for sure the smallest of everything mentioned in this thread so far.

I wanted it for my mom because it’s just her and a little dog. And she’s a terrible driver, so I was trying to steer her to smaller. But for you? Family and the whole nine use…could be a little tight. So definitely spend some time with a NX. Fold the seats down, check out the max cargo capacity and tailgate opening, and all that. It honestly not much different than a wagon…you just sit a little higher. So be sure you can live with the step down in size from the RX.

For the shit you packing OP, NX is a horrible choice.

Cargo specs for the Rx vs NX are whack. From what I've seen it says the NX has more, which can't be possible. Opening the hatch and looking in the back it seemed okay. Don't know about rear legroom..

RX felt really big though, maybe everything has just crept upward in size so much, but parked next to our GX470 the RX seemed a foot longer and several inches wider..

I have to sit down with a pad and paper and start writing side by side specs down in one place to compare.

Non of these mid size SUVs have room for kids and dogs UNLESS you keep the 3rd row seat down.

We got a hybrid highlander AWD platinum package. It's amazing, couldn't imagine amenities it doesn't have. But the cargo room with the 3rd up is a joke. No way for dogs would fit, hello, a double stroller doesnt really fit with the 3rd row up.

Midsize SUVs are all same: lexus, mazda, toyota etc. Midsize SUVs don't have much room really.

Tahoe's and Yukon's do and then the Yukon XL and Suburban.

If you dont need a 3rd row then it's probably fine for your needs.

No third row needed, I took those out of the GX as soon as we bought it and have never needed them, wanted them or used them.

Cargo space potential is nice for hauling gear bags etc. Without having the box on.
We do have a big box for the roof for ski gear and longer trips with lots of stuff ie camping, ski trips.

Kids are becoming teenagers, no strollers needed, just phones and earbuds : rolleyes

I'm still in the TourX (winter) and E39 M5 (Summer) camp...
