Sena Noise Cancelling Helmet

This is something I've put off for a while but I'm still planning on doing it. Pretty cheap actually less than $200

Active Noise reduction kit. Just install it into your helmet.

Pulling on my experience wearing and fitting helmets to pilots and crew, I'd be concerned with the rigid cups over the wearers ears. Aviator helmets are not designed to reduce or disperse the energy from impact. To work well, the ear cups will need to be held firmly and close to the skull (jaw & neck) to allow the very thin foam to create the barrier needed to reduce noise. Should a helmeted head experience an impact with these installed, the energy will have a direct path from the helmet shell, through the ear cups and to the head of the wearer.

ear plugs for cancelling out noise, helmet for not spilling your brain on the sidewalk. That's how it's supposed to work. I'm not too interested in a helmet that likely sacrifices safety to get some noise cancelling.

How do you think this helmet is sacrificing safety?

Same question here. The helmet will be DOT for sure (to comply with US standards), and if they're smart, SNELL too (to comply with EU standards, I think.) I'm all ears. Ba-da-boom.

So far, as history has shown, helmet-installed hardware will be a difficult sell. Make it modular, like all the bluetooth headset already are, and then you're on to something.

Thanks for the great insight but no rigid cups involved, just the speakers and electronics. My current helmet has built-in cups specifically designed to accommodate Bluetooth bike-to-bike intercom & cell phone speakers, I wasn't sure how close or tightly sealed to the ear the cup needed to be to work effectively. I might still try it though. :thumbup

Been riding for oh a decade now and my hearing is still the same last I had it checked and the Army checks it every year. I rode crosscountry this year too. I ride with windscreens most of the time tho. But yeah would me nice to get that windnoise out especially since I have an electric bike now its all you hear.

Well then how are you going to make that VA disability claim??

could not find the correct cvc.

http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=VEH&sectionNum=27400.

but ear plugs are 100% legal in ca.
ear buds are not legal in both ears.
speakers built into the helmet are legal over both ears. (not removable headphones).

mostly a attitude ticket.

but for the courts said device should never prohibit or interfere with being able to hear sounds from outside of your immediate area. aka: a emg siren.
ear buds do not block sound levels of that volume. but music can, and is a detraction to the operator.. even in a car, truck, boat, etc.
no cvc notice about airplanes.:wow

Cool. Let us know how it works out. If the results are positive, I may give it a try. One of my cars has active noise canceling and it works really well.

You have the correct CVC. Here is the full text. The wording of the first paragraph is the portion that may apply here.

CVC 24700 said:
A person operating a motor vehicle or bicycle may not wear a headset covering, earplugs in, or earphones covering, resting on, or inserted in, both ears. This prohibition does not apply to any of the following:

(a) A person operating authorized emergency vehicles, as defined in Section 165.

(b) A person engaged in the operation of either special construction equipment or equipment for use in the maintenance of any highway.

(c) A person engaged in the operation of refuse collection equipment who is wearing a safety headset or safety earplugs.

(d) A person wearing personal hearing protectors in the form of earplugs or molds that are specifically designed to attenuate injurious noise levels. The plugs or molds shall be designed in a manner so as to not inhibit the wearer’s ability to hear a siren or horn from an emergency vehicle or a horn from another motor vehicle.

(e) A person using a prosthetic device that aids the hard of hearing.

Yes and section D is the one that allows ear plug use. AFAIK, commercial ear plugs are all specifically sold to attenuate injurious noise levels. Which is really anything over 85dB. 85 is easily exceeded on a road.

Technically, you could use active noise canceling speakers BUT they need to be marketed to actually reduce injurious noise levels. I doubt Sena will want to put those words on the box because they'll be dragged to court atb some point. Especially since they will be carrying sound (voice/music) and not JUST canceling noise.

I wear 3m -32dB ones on a moto and in my Miata. I can hear sounds BETTER with them in because wind noise doesn't drown everything out.

I am pretty sure this helmet won't deliver in a cost effective mass market way.

That helmet doesn't mention noise reduction for the wearer at all. It's just a helmet with an integrated Sena as far as I can tell.

Yep

Like Enchanter says, if you aren't wearing some kind of ear plugs you ARE getting hearing damage. Just the wind noise from the helmet is plenty to permanently damage your hearing.

Mad

I use the Senate smh10 in helmet speakers, and ear plugs. The sound is actually enhanced by the filtering effect of ear plugs.
I've been using the cheapass brand of - 30db plugs for a long time so far my hearing (tested) is the same as it was 15 years ago. That's also with flailing on electric guitars a few hours a week.

Looks great! Except for the fact that many of their suggested installs involve destroying the EPS padding or the helmet liner to make the muffs fit. Example:

Agreed. Installing Sena ear phones in my Bell Star required scooping out some EPS foam to fit comfortably. I returned the Sena because it did not work function by itself very well.

A helmet that was designed to be quiet and have something like hearing protection built in would be nice. Integrating a working bluetooth headset would be nice too. It does not have to be full Skully smart, just integrate the headset so that it works, protects and it does not stick out in the wind.

Schuberth looks like they do this, but they don't fit me, so I have not tried them.

So these new helmets are shipping and the reviews are abysmal.

The noise canceling apparently does nothing and the helmet seems like overpriced junk.
