Sf biker kills pedestrian

so lets met get this right, a woman was illegally crossing the street, AND there was an illegally parked car as well - and the rider is charged? what the hell

Well no, I don't think it clearly says the woman was crossing illegally.
However it clearly says there was a motorcyclist not being able to stop or not in control of his vehicle.

Actually, pedestrians are as responsible for their safety as riders and drivers. Choosing to jaywalk from behind a double parked vehicle, assuming the rider was not speeding or drunk, would put the fault on the pedestrian.

This is an important concept to ride safely.

I know what the rules are for road users, drivers, riders, and pedestrians.

I also know how a road user can and will break the law, and I expect it from every person I pass.

Like that scooter rider who hit the jogger but was not at fault, he could have done more to ride safe.

who then struck a human being and left her in the street along with his motorcycle while he just walked/ran away.

I see a problem there and I see someone who can be charged with homicide.

I must have missed the 'at speed' part in the report.
It doesn't take much to kill a frail or elderly person - 10mph impact by a moto could easily do it.

Sounds like the rider might not have been found at fault had they stayed. One can only imagine what factors caused them to run (speed, DUI, unlicensed, stolen, unregistered, or uninsured bike, outstanding warrant, etc).

But for those who don't live in SF, you might not understand just how rampant double parking has become. You can not go half a mile without having to go around someone. Some are more cautious than others, but it is never entirely safe.

To clarify: I said "at speed" not the article. By "at speed" I mean the rider didn't slow down to evaluate the situation, AFAIK

It never ceases to amaze me how fast people drive/ride past a line of tightly parked cars. A person or animal could step out anytime, or a door could open into your path. The fact that it might be their fault isn't the point. Move away from the parked cars or slow down.

Bad on the rider for not stopping and helping the pedestrian.

Bad on the pedestrian for crossing in the middle of a block. (It's a miracle these tragedies don't happen more often with the habits I see in the City.)

Contrast the San Francisco rider's action to that of a rider involved in a fatal pedestrian crash this morning in Santa Rosa:

It happened about 5:30 a.m. as James Frank Seefeld, 62, rode a 2002 BMW R1150RT to the west on Montgomery, toward downtown Santa Rosa. Rain fell and the sun hadn’t yet risen.

Santa Rosa Police Traffic Sgt. Ryan Corcoran said Seefeld was approaching Yulupa and was aware of a car coming in his direction. In an instant, Seefeld spotted a person and a grocery cart just ahead in his traffic lane.

“There was nothing the motorcyclist could have done,” Corcoran said.

The BMW struck the man. Seefeld kept control of the motorcycle, slowed, turned back and pulled to a stop where his bike, the headlight still functioning, could guard the man who then lay on the pavement in the westbound lane.

Seefeld rushed to him. The driver of the car that was headed east stopped and dialed 911.
RIP to the pedestrian. :rose

Condolences to Mr. Seefeld. Horrible thing to experience.

In the middle of the block, at night, past a double-parked car in an area where Google StreetView doesn't show an abundance of streetlights...

It should be a red flag anytime you see a car stopped in an unlikely place such as that...59 years old should have known that.

I actually find it hard to believe someone would step out without a big look see.

We actually have a BARFer untangling an insurance nightmare over that very issue right now. People can be incredibly stupid.

I live around the area where it happened. Also between 23rd ave and 24th ave there is a coffee shop and there are a tons of cars double parked there all the time. The road is wide enough to double park without impeding traffic.

I guess they are gonna crackdown on the double parkers now.

Except by running the woman was denied immediate aid. She might have made it if he hadn't left her there :dunno
