Should actors only portray their race/gender/sexuality/religion?

Has he done anything interesting that isn't being a minstrel for a commercial product?

Not terribly familiar with the actor, other than being in Idocracity, but categorizing him as a minstrel, strikes me as reacting dismissively in a similar manner to that which you are apparently/supposedly trying to combat.

Great job on identifying the poignant word in the the sentence while missing the entire point of it's context.

I may have missed your point, but you have given me absolutely no reason to think that it is anywhere close to the point.

You have a bunch of people fawning over the work of a person of color as the work pertains to a product they buy.

They aren't concerned about what the person does that doesn't pertain to products they buy.

He's not a person to them. He's just an entertainer. A Minstrel, if you will.

We're the same racist culture we ever were.

Sure, plenty of films, folks listed them already, but that bizarre art music piece is so exceptional in its weirdness it should be all that matters.

I think you have a hard time even putting yourself in the place of a person who thinks zero about IdPol, like someone who changes the channel every time someone tries to talk about it, thinks zero about how a person is representing a particular identity in a character, and invests zero time in trying to understand or be sensitive to people who may possess an identity that is not the same as their own.

You know, someone that just sees other people as other people and doesn't think about it beyond. Most of these cats in here you are trying to talk about this to are those kinds of cats.

Do you think you are going to enlighten someone?

That is utter nonsense. No performance artist are, "people." They are the product they sell that is all. They are not humans that we get to know and care about. I watched the hell out of Star Trek and even follow George Takei some on Social Media, but that doesn't mean I think I know him at all or understand him as a person. Entertainment personalities create a persona that they sell to the media, it is all fabricated nonsense. I don't care who their kids are or what their politics are about, why the fuck would I?

They guy just has a terrific screen presence and undeniable Charisma, with just like this little twitch of crazy that makes him brilliant for comedy. That combined with his physical presence makes him a real performing force of the type we haven't seen much of since Schwarzenegger.

I first saw him in Friday after Next, where he was hilarious, and he was like the only shining star in White Chicks (which was terrible), his performance in Idiocracy is legendary, but the most screen time he has gotten I've seen is as one of the main characters on Brooklyn 9-9. He is just one of those guys like Duane Johnson, he just seems to always put on a performance that is enjoyable even in a shitty picture, he just has that gift.

Ricardo Montalbán plays an asian bad guy in a really old Hawaii Five-O. Hilarious eye make up.

Might have to see that one again.

And as usual, white straight people are offended on others behalf.

Woah wtf. You sound like the one with the problem.

I threw out Terry for levity because:

Ex pro athlete
Still looks like an action figure
Has been in a bunch of downright hilarious and awesome films and tv shows
Has played a wide range of characters
Stood up against powerful Hollywood abusers
Comes off as a genuinely nice person
Plays the flute

He’s rules at everything.

I still don’t know his politics nor do I care. Whatever the film is, it would be better with Terry in it. Minstrel? GTFO.

A whole lot of people got real mad at the word minstrel.

And they were right to. I went to far with that. I apologise to anyone I upset with it.

I'm stunned that you failed to mention disabled people. We won't have real justice and equity in the US until a disabled actor in a wheelchair plays Jesse Owens.

The last thing I want to know about actors, musicians, and other entertainers is anything about their personal lives, sexual preferences, politics, whether they think they're a chick/dude, etc. I do prefer historical portrayals to at least be the same race.

You knew what what you were doing.

I appreciate your confidence in me!

I was trying to make the point that the folks who were celebrating Crews don't care what he does it says outside of being an entertainer. And too some degree, I was successful. It seems they don't care, and are just fine with it.

In doing so I used some really regrettable language to try and make a point. And in doing so, I completely lost the point, and probably hurt some people.

I don't feel good about that.

:facepalm

... and you weren't "successful" in the least. You may have had a slightly valid point, but you wildly overreached.

Crews has done his best to explain his twitter posts, he seems like a decent man, as well as entertaining. The fact people enjoy having work has nothing to do with that to anyone but you.

I think the way it comes off is you don't find him "black enough" for you, but that's just like my opinion.

(Btw, usually I somewhat agree with your posts and enjoy reading them. I have confidence I'll agree with other things you may say. :thumbup )
