i am using the barrels right outside the weapon shop/forge just inside Whitehall until i get a house. i haven't lost anything, yet.....
now knowing there are more, and more expensive, houses i've continued my hoarding ways and am now up to 10k with no house. from someone who's played further than i, i'm wondering if it makes a difference from a resource investment stand point compared to the convenience gained of owning just one, ideally located house vs. just owning them all.
to earn $ the "just play the game and don't worry about it" method works awesome, for me. i just hack, loot, craft, sell rinse, repeat and usually blow away my targets for what i'm saving for. i'm being timid with my skill points. i've only spent 5 of them on 1 handed combat so far. hoarding my other 8 atm.
i may be putting them towards bow, though, since it's quite fun poping mobs from distance.
