So, you turn diving down to the Titanic into a tourist business..what could go wrong?

A search and rescue operation is underway for a submarine touring the wreckage of the Titanic
The US Coast Guard launched a search and rescue operation Monday for a submarine that went missing during an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic, CNN partner CTV News reported.

The group conducting the trip, Oceangate Expeditions, said it is “exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely.”

“Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families. We are deeply thankful for the extensive assistance we have received from several government agencies and deep sea companies in our efforts to reestablish contact with the submersible,” the group said. “We are working toward the safe return of the crewmembers.”
How could you not realize that this was a bad idea that was going to bite them?

The forces involved are enormous, it was always just a matter of time. Kind of like the tourism of Mount Everest, some things are just extremely dangerous and shouldn't be comercialized.

Going to space is coming.

I personally think if people want to do it, can afford it and there is an avenue then they should be able too.

Hoping for the best. Also hope they have good insurance to cover the cost of rescue and lost lives.

What a nightmare.

The fact that they haven't been found already bobbing on the surface is not good at all.

It's funny as a child i really wanted to go to space, but now I do not. Sleeping is awful, the food is awful, pooping is awful, cosmic rays destroy your vision, muscle atrophy, space aliens...

Oh yeah, much like plane travel, if they went off grid and we don't know where you are, we're just trying to confirm bodies.

This isn't the 1800's, submarine travel is relatively safe now. :dunno

Well this is well beyond just a submarine journey. It is edgy tech to go that deep for sure. I would not do it for $2500 or $250 or $2.50 either. Heck I would not do it if they paid me $250K to go.

Ahhh, the deep blue abyss.

Before they let anyone on that sub, they should ask them to show some elementary math describing the water pressure there and what it can do. There's a simple equation, divide depth by two. 12,500 feet is roughly 6000 psi.

What can 6,000 psi do?

When submarines at depths of a few thousand feet implode due to overpressure, there's literally an explosion of fuel, human fat, solvents and anything flammable as it is compressed to the pressures in a simple V8 gas motor. 6,000 psi breached into a submarine at the site of the wreck would instantly do the same, with much more force. In short, the humans would become diesel fuel.

Are you getting some kind of schadenfreude out of this?
Not sure why you'd get that idea. It's actually very insulting for you to say that.

I think that it was a stupid idea, the kinds of pressures involved make it extremely dangerous, like climbing Everest repeatedly, if you roll those dice enough times you're eventually going to come up snake eyes.

Does that take port over well? Lots of forces in all forms of racing. How could they not realize? It's just a matter of time.

Do you even know what 6k psi is?

Back in my days as a submarine engineer, they talked about a pin hole leak at 2500 foot depth would cut your arm off if you brought your arm through the stream.

Space flight forces are childs play compared to deep ocean forces.

thanks for that link G. it has actual information.

The 5-person submersible, named Titan, is capable of diving 4,000 meters or 13,120 ft. “with a comfortable safety margin,” OceanGate said in its filing with the court.

titanic rests at ~12,500 ft. the sub in question according to the operator

OceanGate told the court that Titan’s viewport is “the largest of any deep diving submersible”

anyone want to guess that the viewport/hull joint didn't have the safety margin they thought it did?

what a terrifying way to go.

Well... according to the window of O2 there is still a chance.

Hoping for the best. Indeed terrifying if they are sitting there waiting.
You would think a communication would have taken place if they were still alive. :dunno

The submersible looked like a beer can with a fin. Expected result is expected.

If the viewport went at depth, you'd never know what hit you. You'd be dead in a blink of the eye

I'm in that club! No thanks.
