STREET LEGAL REFLECTOR/LICENSE PLATE LIGHT

I've been wondering about this whole consolidator/eliminator thing ever since some squid offered to take a Dremel tool to my SV's rear fender a few years ago. What's the appeal? And I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Maybe I'm just a dork, but I like having a rear fender. Like BudBandit implied, I can totally understanding modding your bike to get better performance out of it, but why spend precious $$$ on removing stuff? All you get out of it is a nice mud-stripe up your backside on wet days. And a ticket, apparently. :(

Sometimes I wonder if someone started passing a rumor around that consolidating your rear lights improves your bike's aerodynamic coefficient.

No you are not a dork. It's what I think they call 'aesthetics'. Some folks want to make their vehicles (bike or cage) pleasing to their own eyes. Sometimes it works with others opinions sometimes it don't. You don't need to wonder why it is because it is. It just is. If it don't work for you no need to be harsh on yourself and label yourself a dork. <shrugs shoulders>

well its not like i have my plate mounted tucked away like some of the eliminators out there, mine mounts right below my undertail exhaust, so its in plain view. and like most eliminators, it takes out any place for a reflector. my turn signals are integrated, when i purchased them they said dot, so i thought i was ok. but from what chp said that its not street legal. "any modifications aside from what comes with the bike stock, is illegal"

I couldn't agree more. I personally do not have a licence plate light or reflectors; I bought my bike used and it was already in that condition. However, I wouldn't throw a hissy fit just because the CHP is enforcing the written law.

well this thread started with me asking, does anyone know what is considered street legal for reflectors, and license plate lights. and the whole chp eating a dick, isnt because i got a ticket, it was because the way he acted from the moment he opened his mouth. fyi

The V.C. doesn't specify a particular size.

However it does state: "(f) Area reflectorizing material may be used in lieu of the reflectors required or permitted in subdivisions (a), (b), (c), (d), and (e), provided each installation is of sufficient size to meet the photometric requirement for those reflectors."

One side benefit of all this is the elimination of those Florda-ridah, chainguard-mounted plates. :thumbdown

I got stopped by a ranger last weekend on 9 with my stock fender on and he still wanted to right me a ticket for aftermarket turn signals on my 2007 gsxr1000.

he tried to tell me that my signals werent OEM.

Please.... :x

Good luck to ya.

Point out the DOT stamp on the lensing.

what is interesting about that is the law that requires that predates the use of the modern reflective paints now found on license plates. your entire license plate is a reflector and any light shone upon it will reflectively over power the little 5 watt bulb. california plates used to be flat black with non reflective orange letters. so you could argue that you do have a reflector on the plate, built in to it, but the light is still required and you can get a mini led light which does little but will meet that legal requirement.

turn signals are not required at all, you can either not have them or have tiny ones and use hand signals as well or instead. only one mirror is also required on a moto. you do not have to use turn signals on a moto, you can use hand signals instead and it is fully legal, and thus, you cannot be pulled over for your signals being inadequate unless you are turning and using them with out hand signals. i use both hand signals and my dot aftermarket turn signals during the day, because even the oem ones were just as hard to see, and at night i use just the turn signals because they are more than bright enough at night.

Interesting. I guess it maybe a reason to just give LEOs probable cause to check the bike (stolen?) and/or rider?? Regardless, I'm 100% legit and though inconvenient if I do get pulled over for a vehicle code violation I will fix it (and still try to make aesthetically pleasing to me as possible :p) and chalk it as learning experience.

i have only been pulled over for a hard to read plate that was only fastened with twistie ties because a drunk driver had destroyed what is was on. i was let off and told to fix the plate permanently with bolts of some sort and a bracket.

ahahaha...just found a picture of said GSXR turn signals. Awesome! :laughing

yep, that's it

to the op: can you tell us where you got ticketed? (hwy 9/84/etc) Also, how much was the fix it ticket? I'm tired of hearing about these kind of threads and thinking about putting back my stock exhaust for now and maybe license shovel. Is there a dot requirement for the license plate light? Or will the 6 led lic. plate frame and red coin reflectors will make the fender elim. legal? thx in advance!

Here you go...

"V.C. 24601. Either the taillamp or a separate lamp shall be so constructed and placed as to illuminate with a white light the rear license plate during darkness and render it clearly legible from a distance of 50 feet to the rear. When the rear license plate is illuminated by a lamp other than a required taillamp, the two lamps shall be turned on or off only by the same control switch at all times."

my cousin was ticketed for his exhaust, after swapping it back to stock, and getting it signed off. his ticket was 170

So, can I put a reflector on the back of my helmet? Like one of those tape type? Or maybe the reflective panels on my jacket?

I am in the midst right now of trying to track down some LED License bolts for my bike.. hard to find... pain the arse..

You can put reflectors on the back of your helmet, but that doesn't absolve you of the requirement for your bike to have reflectors, also.

+1

The equipment has to be reflective according to the V.C., not the rider.

I'm pretty certain many leo's here have said if your bike came with turn signals, they are required. No?
