I have read through all this and a couple of other articles and I admit I have no idea of how these things are done but, if a semi truck is stuck off the road, we send a similar sized tow truck to pull them out.
Why send a bunch of substantially smaller tug boats to try to push/pull the mammoth ship free instead of sending in a similar sized ship and use the big ship to pull the grounded ship free.
This is too simplistic and I must be missing something...
Same reason we don't use a Cadillac to pull a Cadillac out of the ditch. You'll just burn out the transmission and ruin the tires. Or pull off the bumper.
The tugs may have 6,000 and up horsepower, in a small package with big moveable screws, designed to push and pull, with appropriate anchoring points, low in the water, and five of them will have as much power a a big ship like the one in the canal. They can be moved ANYWHERE needed, as opposed to a big ship like the one stuck, which could just end up stuck as well.
