SV / MV rebuild - It's (almost) alive!

How the hell do you keep your wife happy?

I think that's why this project is taking so long...

:x

c'mon already! I'm dyin over here! :p

Most of the big stuff done...

Who'd think all the SV electronics and a Penske reservoir would fit so nicely under an MV tail? Nice when it all works out, no?

Mmmm...sexy 2-1-2-4 custom, one of a kind exhaust...
The Dymags aren't too bad, either!

Bodywork going to paint. Graphics and decal placement in mock-up.
Very exciting!

Since I have the 999 front wheel for the 748 project and eye balling it made me wonder, I tossed it on the GSX-R front end. How interesting...it appears that if I space the calipers (neat feature of radial mounting) and mess with the axle spacers, a 999 wheel can fit on a GSX-R 1000 front end.
Now, if you were going to buy wheels, you'd want to get the GSX-R wheel. But if you happen to have a 748 with a 999R front end on it and your SV project happens to be able to run that same front wheel (and your SV has also been modifed to run a Ducati rear wheel on its Honda RC 30 swing arm...!) you can use the same wheels on both bikes! How cool is that?
I'll let you know if this 'really' works. Gotta do some careful measuring...but it sure looks workable. Also gotta love Karma for little things like this. What are the odds?

OMG, that is going to be the SICKEST SV on the planet!

I'm sure this is a stupid question, but are you leaving the tank carbon, or painting it?

Thanks for the kind words. I'm really happy with how it's turning out. As to the tank, it's going to have some paint and some exposed carbon. The carbon will tie into the seat area. Here's the basic design on half the tank. The taped off area will be exposed carbon and what's carbon here will be paint.
The design will be duplicated on the other side, all nice and symmetrical-like. I've changed the front design so it flares out and meets the fairing so the color from the fairing will flow right up onto the tank.
Dropped all the bodywork off today at Bobby Keith's!

Nice work, that's by far the best custom SV I've ever seen. I'm curious, did you choose to work off a 1st gen simply because that's what you had, or is there a more specific reason?

Put on the 999R forks. They are way more bling.

Heh, maybe get the tubes nitride coated black like the GSXR forks. Plus brembo brakes are way cooler. Put the GSXR forks on the Ducati! :teeth

Looks great! However, from a practical point of view, you could've easily bought a brand new MV with all the money and time you've put into this project.

I cant wait to see the finished product...I'm in awe

"Practical"? Did he say "practical"?
He don't know me very well, do he?

Seriously, though. This isn't about anything close to practical. It's just me chasing my passion to mess with stuff. Anyone (with the funds) can by an MV or any other bike/toy they want. No thanks... I'd rather end up with 'my bike' - not one just like all those others out there. Nothing against anyone, that's just my preference. If you'd have invested your time and money differently, more power to you.
And this project is nothing - wait until you see my 1961 Suburban TurboDiesel vegetable oil buring hot rod project...! That's a whole 'nother deal, all together...
Sorry for the non-bike pic - but hey, it's gonna haul bikes. Does that count?

I've had the SV since new in 2001 and I saw a photoshop of an MV tail on an SV and thought 'That's cool...' So I started looking for, and quickly found, an MV tail. It just sort of spiraled out of control from there.

VERY nice work...I can't wait to see more of it. And to the one MV-owning poster in this thread who appears to be taking your work a little too personally--lighten up! It's not like he's sticking a "Type R" sticker on a Kia and telling his friends it's better than your NSX. And really, so what if he were?

OK, I usually don't tease this stuff but...

I just picked up the painted bodywork from Cycle Finish.
Let me just say this:
HOLY CRAP! :cool :teeth :thumbup

It is so nice I may not be able to ride this bike ever again!

The tank looks so cool that when I first saw it, I said to myself, "I can't believe I made that...". It's as nice as anything I've seen on any custom or production bike.
I'll be putting it all back together and posting pics as soon as it's ready for its big debut. Should be this weekend, if not sooner.

So hats off and a "Dude! That ROCKS!!" to Bob and Camille at Cycle Finish. I'm thrilled, if you couldn't tell.

More soon...
