Tail Gating

Keep the discussion on topic and stop making this a gender issue.

Like you, I too live in the SC Mtns. I drive and ride 17 all the time. The only place the flow of traffic is 65-70 is on the very few straight sections. In the curves, regular people drive 45-55. Like you I am frustrated with the drivers on 17, but for different reasons. They never move over for faster moving traffic.

No matter how fast you are going, it’s just common courtesy to let faster drivers and riders pass you.

This was my first thread post and it will be my last.

BARF has a misogyny problem.

You think the comments here have anything to do with gender?

I'd expect the same replies if a guy posted it. I didn't even notice that your username indicated gender until you decided to whine about mansplaining.

Same here. I didn't even realize it was a female until she started insulting other members with her rude mansplaining comments.

OP, I think you came to barf with lots of preconceived ideas. Yeah, it's a male dominated board. Yeah, there are sometimes rude comments and sometimes even misogynistic ones. But it's gotten a lot better. YOU are the one coming here stirring up trouble when others were just trying to be helpful. You should check your attitude. If you don't come back and don't read this, oh well. Your loss.

Maybe, but not in this thread. You're getting the same responses anyone would.

Agreed. There was no splaining other than rider to rider.

Why so sensitive?

Jeez, now you guys are mansplaining about how you weren't mansplaining! Such a hostile environment around here... :dunno

There are times when police want to get somewhere quickly, but lights and siren are not legally authorized or would be outside of Department policy. Just sayin....

Want or need? What would be an example of a situation where, as an officer, you would feel the necessity to tailgate in order to pressure someone to move over but lights and siren would not be acceptable to use?

Responding to a domestic dispute that is not yet violent is the first thing that comes to mind. Lights and sirens would not be authorized, since it’s just a verbal argument at that point. However, things can escalate quickly and I would want to get there before it turns violent and someone gets hurt.

There are thousands of permutations.

Is it illegal to follow too closely? Of course.
If I rear ended the car in front of me, would I be at fault? Of course.
Am I tailgating for miles on end as the car refuses to move? Of course not.
It’s a weighted risk that I’m willing to take on occasion.

You just described something every single one of us has done.

Are you seriously going to say the risk you, as a cop, take is the same as someone like me would be taking?

You might actually be at fault for a rear-ender, but I highly doubt you'd be found at fault.

When was the last time you got a traffic ticket?

If you’re intimating some level of corruption with collision investigation, you have zero idea what you’re talking about.

I’ve been involved in on-duty collisions. I was found appropriately at fault in one, and appropriately not at fault in the other.

There is a huge difference between being stopped for a vehicle code violation and being involved in an accident. A traffic stop is just a one on one interaction with the officer for an observed vehicle code violation. Professional courtesy is often extended. It also has no bearing on this conversation.

A collision involves another person, and intentionally placing blame for a collision on the wrong party is illegal, unethical, and immoral.

I would actually argue the risk as a cop is greater. People are always more willing to sue when they see the City/PD involved. The appearance/likelihood of a payout is much greater than just me driving my $2500 20yo Acura TL if I were off-duty.

This right here. Huge difference between a violation of the state infraction and a collision with a second party.
