Tesla Model X

Model X will start at $80,000, like I posted before.

How much for the other 3 wheels? :p

Anyone who thinks they're gonna get a Model X for $80k is naive.

They just announced a $29k upgrade to their roadster. They're starting to sound like a video game developer. Buy the car for 'cheap' then every year a $10K+ upgrade/update will be available.

But if Musk's tweet is accurate, it's only gonna be $5k more than the S, which was my question. I'm still trying to understand why the Sig Series is $27k more than it's Model S P85D counterpart. Seems odd that would have such a big gap. Maybe the gap will scale up with each higher model. We'll know soon enough. Very curious whether they can sell these in real volume and whether or not it's going to cannibalize the Model S.

Tesla is not even on "Uncle Sam’s Favorite Corporations". They did make the lower end of other lists, FYI.

Taking that list simply at face value is meaningless, particularly when you consider the nature of the tax breaks and the nature of the companies, i.e., almost solely energy companies that are one of the very foundations of our economy. The U.S. could not function without those companies. Tesla, not so much. Same with the financial system bailouts. Those benefited every American by keeping us out of a total financial meltdown with massive losses to every single taxpayer. Again, Tesla's tax breaks haven't benefited anyone but Tesla investors.

Between Tesla, Solar City and SpaceX, Musk's basically had one hand on the wheel and one extended out to the government to get paid to run otherwise impractical businesses. He's Mr. Haney in a nicer suit, and he's very good at it.

Yup. He's got too many pots on the stove. Btw...how many failed rocket launches in a row has that been for SpaceX now?

Ooooo, you guys. You're going to get a stern email from T3h Elon along with vitrol from his hoards of testicle supporters!!!

While you all continue the circle-jerk of anti-Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity I only have one reply, since every single one of my points and yours has a counter point we will never get anywhere.

All I know is Elon has a lot of money, no matter what game he is playing (altruistic or taking the government for money), it's working. Personally I'd rather his companies get handouts than the other places tax payer money goes.

Gullwing doors and 7-passenger seating......That seems to be about it.

He is referencing the "top of the line" models of each version. Tesla Model S had a "Signature" one that came out as well I believe. Well above the standard model price. I believe the signature of the Model X is also a limited production vehicle. He has also said it is the price point because it is FULLY LOADED with everything possible.

Elon has already said that the Model X will only cost ~$5K more than the Model S (tweet from yesterday).

All models will have Gullwing doors and seat 7.

Funny. That seems to be their reaction when I tell them my quote for the now two times they've tried to headhunt me. They also just tried to poach one of my guys a couple weeks ago...offered him $4/hr less than what I pay him with a piddly $8k in stock vesting over 4 years. They claim he'll make more money because they "have an unlimited overtime budget" so he'd probably wind up working 60-70 hours a week.

I talked to a service manager who said the dealers' service and parts departments are "non profit operations." Hmm....not willing to pay jack shit for any decent talent, yet willing to throw money away everywhere else?

So yeah. Call it salty if you want. But fuck them. They need to learn how to be a real car company real soon or life is gonna suck for them when they actually have a high volume car on their hands.

I'm still trying to understand why the Sig Series is $27k more than it's Model S P85D counterpart.

I just built a Model S P85D that is $133k before incentives. So, actually about the same as the Model X "Signature" series which is the same thing and "fully loaded" like the P85D I just built.

Btw Mike, I hope your compensation package with them is better than what they've offered me or a lot of people I know.

They have always hired people "cheaply." They do it with all their talent. The idea being that you're garnering the "I worked for Tesla" on your resume and you're working on cutting edge projects. You work for Tesla partly because you want to, not just because of pay reasons. I know a lot of people are purely money driven and that's fine.

How are they throwing money away everywhere else? They don't even pay for advertising I believe.

"A real car company," :laughing you keep saying that. What I know about "real car companies" is their attempts to limit the places you get service, gauge you at dealerships, and "fuck you." So.. yeah.

This makes no sense, considering that parts & service accounts for 50-60% of what most dealerships make. But who knows, maybe Tesla dealers don't sell shit for parts.

Go to the Model S site and click "order yours". The "design studio" pops up. Now select almost everything P85D, Ludicris Mode, Spoiler, Autopilot, P90D range upgrade, Premium Interior and Lighting, Air Suspension, Audio, Sub Zero, ... Then you get to $131 K.

Is Tesla making it easy for independents to work on Teslas? Somehow I doubt it. :laughing

Do Tesla's need much maintenance? It's a fully electric vehicle. So your typical maintenance is not necessary.

Plus, this isn't so much an issue with "Tesla holding back independents" so much as there isn't a demand for independents to work on them, so they are not trying to. They are not getting training because the cost/benefit doesn't make sense.

Why would a mechanic go get trained or start working on a vehicle they won't see often, if ever. In the future they may seek training etc.

That's the idea. Tesla is not trying to make money at their dealers like other dealers are. It also has to be mentioned that there is a lot less maintenance/ repair needed for a BEV over an ICE.

There are many things that will need repair, like the suspension (bushings, control arms, shocks, etc), and then there's steering, driveshafts, and all the luxury features, power windows, sunroof, HVAC, etc.

If there are independents who specialize in tiny brands like Saab or Ferrari, then eventually there will be independents who specialize in Tesla.
