First real info released today. The top of the line Signature Series (think of the P85D equivalent) is priced at $132,000. So you get to pay $27,000 more than a Model S P85D for an 'SUV' that you can't put a roof rack on and which doesn't appear to have any offroad capabilities at all. :wtf

BTW, for your $132k you don't even get heated seats or a towing package. You have to pay extra for that.

Discuss.

Why can't you put a roof rack on it? No slots for it?

Most SUVs don't have any offroad capabilities anyways. 99% of the ones that do don't get taken off the road.

... and most buy them because they don't like the stigma of the mini-van (which this Model X looks more like) or the station wagon.

Yup... ready for Baja.

Just like 99% of the AWD cars here in Cali never get put into situations where AWD is a significant advantage.

Depends on how you define SUV. When I buy an SUV, at a minimum I want really heavy snow capability and a decent angle of attack and departure. Then again, most people who want those things aren't spending over $100k on their SUV.

I'm very curious what the pricing on the lower models is going to be. Tesla indicated that this vehicle would be positioned as a transition vehicle to the $35k (riiiiight) mass market Model III, yet the top of the line Model X is priced way above the top of the line Model S. Seems strange that the others would be priced lower than their Model S counterparts.

Yup.

Same reasons Harley's sell. You're purchasing a brand and an image. It'll sell, and sell well

I do wonder how well. The Model S sales have slowed and the incentives are going away, particularly for higher income buyers.

I think they'll have a big splash initially, but I wonder if they'll get a ton of volume out of this vehicle.

On a related note, the design sketches of the Audi EV SUV rumored to be released in 2017 look awesome and got me immediately interested. Way cooler looking than the Tesla.

Absolutely.

Audi's always been the poor step child to Mercedes and BMW. Make some great cars (and some shit ones), but never seemed to obtain the status symbol of either Merc or BMW.

I don't see Tesla as anything relative to those three though. It's a niche car for a few thousand early adopters, mostly in Silicon Valley.
