The Mother of all Best Western Film Threads

I enjoyed "The Salvation" with Mads Mikkelson, even if a lot of it was in Danish... but it did have Eva Green!

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2720680/

Haven’t heard of this flick. Plot summary reads “jon goes on a revenge killing spree after learning that his family was murdered.”

Any film with Mads Mikkkkkkkelesen on a revenge killing spree is a film I must see. Nice :love Will place in cue. Thanks!

Another western that I don't think was mentioned, but it is an almost perfect movie, is "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford".

It's long, rather cerebral, and Pitt's Jesse James, whom he says he's a descendent of coming from Missouri, is surprisingly good, as are Casey Affleck's and Sam Rockwell's. Also note the haunting narration by Hugh Ross, it just fits the whole tone of the movie.

That's one of my favorites and I didn't mention it in this thread because literally all the O.G.'s bitch about that movie being too long and such. It's a fantastic film and while I realize this will be controversial as hell, I'd put it right up there with "Unforgiven". :later :2cents

+1, an awesome "revisionist Western" ... Mr Affleck was robbed of his Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" by Mr Bardem's performance in "No Country For Old Men" :x

speaking of revisionist Westerns worthy of multiple viewings, have we mentioned "Dead Man" yet?

tl/dr: Mr Jarmusch, plus Mr Pop, plus Mr Blake--the poet--plus Mr Mitchum, plus music by Mr Young, ftw. :ride

I was fully expecting not to like it because I thought "The Long Riders"* was the most definitive movie on the James/Younger gang, but 15 or 20 minutes in I was riveted. The depiction of Jesse was neither heroic, or even the "Everyman" he's often made out to be. Pitt's Jesse is sliding in to paranoia, he knows his "friends" will turn him in either for the money, or to save their own skins. Affleck's depiction of Robert Ford is an added chilling take on the "Cult of Celebrity", particularly when the realization hits that they are flawed.

*I really enjoyed "The Long Riders", I thought it was the first "realistic" western, but I was 18. I thought it was great that real life brothers played the James's, Youngers, Millers, and Fords.... (Keach's, Carradine's, Quaid's, and Guest's)

"You know what I was expecting? Applause." :applause

Affleck was robbed with not getting more recognition for his performance. I honestly feel like it was one Pitt's better performances, too.

They seem to be shotgunning every western made... how "western". :laughing

Indeed. "The Lone Ranger"?? With Johnny Depp!?!??

Mind, granted, I didn't see it. Nobody saw it.

I will note, however, in "Winchester '73", the tricks shots in the movie, where I think they shoot through a washer thrown in the air, can't remember.

Anyway, those were real. They weren't staged. Had a professional trick shooter (who's name eludes me) do the work on film.

There are some old films on the list I will check out.

"The Wind" from 1927 with Ms Gish sounds good ... "hallucinatory"! :laughing

if you've never seen it "The Proposition" with Mr Guy Pierce is an awesome outback of Australia western. I was disappointed the media list didn't include "Quigley Down Under," too ... :x

Well, if we're going to stretch the genre, there's that "eastern", "Last of the Mohicans". A favorite movie of mine (but I pretty much like anything Mann puts out).

Funny, all the top hits on youtube are the soundtrack!
