Eagles beat the Giants in January and it's meh. Like a cripple and a retarded kid fighting over the last participation trophy.

Schefter and Mortensen both saying they are going after Sean Payton.

It would be nice to think that something could change, but the dynamics of Baalke-York as dominant-submissive were so frickin obvious at the Harbaugh firing and presser afterwards. I don't think there is any way an abrasive or otherwise controlling guy gets the HC job, so Kelly and Payton are not worth wasting your time. They will get someone more passive, at least on the surface, somebody who doesn't scowl at the media and nation in general. I think Mike Holmgren is more likely, for example. He may be full of fire, but he comes off as more inward.

If you look at Tomsoula, you get the idea. They will keep getting guys like that until they get lucky. Which I doubt will happen. They say they want to win with class, they actually want to have control more than anything, win or lose. That's what it SEEMS like, from my couch.

Raiders made it a game late....

Raiders had their chances this year but lost a couple of games they should've won, but overall I'm pretty happy with a 7 win season after the last few years, and they are showing signs of progress. A few more pieces to the puzzle are needed, but it's a good young team finding their way.

+1

I predicted 7-9 prior to the beginning of the season. I'm satisfied with it.

What I'm not satisfied with is how Carr deals with pressure. I get pangs of worry that he'll be another Jake Plummer-type, who can look so commanding for long stretches, until the opposing defense steps their game up. Then come the boneheaded, game-killing throws.

Give credit to the Oak defense, because before the 2 INTs, Alex Smiff and the KC team in general were blowing the Raiders off of the field. He's such a smart QB that I was really surprised they got 2 INTs off of him. Hindsight is 20/20, but damn SF really screwed the pooch by letting him go for Kaepernick.

My one ref rant for the year: There was a shit load of holding against KC which got a little frustrating, but whatever, good teams find ways to overcome that. KC deserved the win, regardless.

I'm thinking those come from playing from behind a lot of the time... :dunno

I'm sure Smith is happy have the wreckage that is the current 9ers behind him, the playoffs ahead of him, and a receiver like Maclin which he hasn't had since he got to KC. But, what he needs is a playoff win since the last one for them came with Joe Montana throwing and Marcus Allen running.

That's not what Matt Maiocco seems to think. He did a live chat last night on Periscope (WTF is Periscope) and I read a pretty good summary of how he thinks that the coaching situation will shake out. Even more than a national guy like Schefter or Mortensen, Maiocco really has inside information on what's going on with the Niners:

Summary:
Maiocco believes the team will look outside the organization for a new head coach, and they will "go big" after what happened with Tomsula.

Two names to keep an eye on: Chip Kelly and Sean Payton. Either go after Kelly or trade for Payton. Likely to be an offensive head coach. Hue Jackson is another candidate.

Situation with Kaepernick is "wide open", reminds Maiocco of the the 2011 Alex Smith situation. Maiocco believes it's gonna come down to whether the next head coach wants Kaepernick as his starter or not. Having missed a number of games this year the 49ers get about a $3M credit on his salary.

Maiocco sees "zero chance" of Tomsula remaining on the staff. Doesn't believe a new head coach would want the former coach on his staff.

Tom Rathman "most likely" candidate to be on the staff next year.

"No chance Geep Chryst is back as offensive coordinator".

Maiocco "doesn't see" Eric Mangini returning either.

Next coach will be able to decide who remains on the staff.

Maiocco doesn't think they go after Vic Fangio, thinks Holmgren "isn't a fit", suspects "the ship has sailed" on Adam Gase.

Situation at starting QB is "wide open", depends on next head coach. Same with free agency targets.

Maiocco thinks the way the team has played this season ultimately cost Tomsula the job.

A QB with the 7th pick will depend on the next head coach.

The new head coach will have a free reign, Baalke will have to cater to the new hire.

Maiocco thinks the 49ers will hire a new coach "fairly quickly", "within the next 2 weeks". Adds that the 49ers "have a lot of money".

SF paid Tomsula 10.5M by firing him.

Payton's still under contract, which means NO will want compensation for letting him go. not only that, but he currently is the highest paid coach in the NFL, at 8M per year.

I don't see Payton going to SF.

there's some talk of Hue Jackson interest. There's some synergy there. He's done great with Cinci, did well with catering an offense for Jason Campbell, but also did shitty with his one year with Carson Palmer. He's not a slam-dunk for being a successful coach, but there's some promise.

I wouldn't be terribly upset with Chip Kelly, as long as he doesn't get player control which is what killed him in Philly.

It's kind of too bad that Gase won't happen.

Let's mentally bookmark what Maiocco says and check back. I would be curious. I don't see Baalke relinquishing control whatsoever, unless he's such a poor fit anywhere else that he needs the job very very badly.

Curious if anyone could figure out who Harbaugh's tweet was aimed at....

"you reap what you sow"

haha...yeah I'll give you three guesses

Well, the reason I brought it up was because the KNBR guys speculated that he was heckling Tomsoula for turning against him last year, whereas I thought it was aimed at management itself. What is your best guess?

That was a jab at Tomsula. They were allegedly not even on speaking terms when Harbaugh was let go, because Tomsula had been playing office politics and angling for the HC job before it was even available.

Yeah. I kind of wanted to send the Old Man off with a win, but at the same time I'm kind of, "meh, now we get the better draft pick than you guys." I assume the Ben McAdoo era in Joisey will begin soon once Coughlin's retirement is announced.

I'm personally hoping that they keep Spags on Defense there. While the Offense has been chugging under McAdoo, our AWFUL defense has been doing some good things under Spags since he came back. I feel like the guy is not getting enough credit for the terrible roster he is working with.

I still can't believe the Niners won in fucking OT and the Chargers couldn't beat the corpse of Peyton Manning, dropping us from the 3rd pick to fucking 7th.

I hope Goff is there, now. I don't see Hargreaves lasting till 7.
