The Official 2016/2017 NFL Thread

Flip to the decade before, through out most of the 70's the 9ers were a huge suck and the Raiders were contenders. Giants were never really in it, but as I said, I went to my first Giants game(s) in May 1971 (it was a double header, remember those?) and got to see not only Willie Mays hit a HR, but Hank Aaron too... and those were the years of the A's dynasty.

Watched a little bit of the 9ers against the Broncos, Ponder looked alright. :dunno

Yeah, I could see him taking the #2 spot.
Two thoughts: my 9ers' offense is still horrendous; Denver defense is still the best.

P.S. The 9ers were actually a solid squad from '70-'72. The suckage from '73-'80 was just so bad it erased those three bright spots. :dunno

Did he teach them to go 8-8 after that? :rolleyes

So none of the "issues" about Harbs getting fired were affecting the locker room or team performance? You know, the discussions that started in April (?) 2014 about trading him to Cleveland? Yeah, that type of undercutting and "writing on the wall" will have no affect on a team. :rolleyes

:laughing

The stupidity of that situation will go down in NFL history as "how a power hungry GM ruined a well-coached team."

uh, no?

They're all professionals. They have their job to do regardless of what happens between the coach and the FO.

Yes, they are professionals. They are also people. There is no way to exclude that from the equation. Motivation is one of the key factors to success/failure in any human endeavor.

So is the ability to separate the job you need to do from other shit.

I'd agree with you if it were tennis or bowling or some other individual sport. But when you all need to work together to make something happen shit gets a bit more dicey. Not everyone has the same level of competence when it comes to compartmentalizing their feelings from their motivations. And all it takes is one or three of the eleven on the field. There was a great deal of turmoil in that locker room. Some of it had to have revolved around support of Harbs. If there were even a few guys who didn't support him then all oars were not pulling in the same direction.

Yeah, they just couldn't get past the Cowboys (til '81-82).

The other problem was that 9er games were never on TV during those suck years, the CBS channel around here mostly opted to show the Rams, 'boys, or the Vikings during 9er home games that didn't sell out.

you have zero proof of that

you could also say that players were quitting on harbaugh because he was too much of a hardass and pushed them too hard and made them play through injuries or concussions and it was to the point that players retired or took a year off instead of continuing to play.

that isn't the right narrative though.

Seriously though. Shit was 2 years ago.

We're supposed to be Overreacting about Christian Ponder and beating the Broncos right now.

I think that some of the opposition in the locker room stemmed from this.

If the FO had Harbs' back though that locker room talk wouldn't have gone anywhere.

As for proof I'm not sure what you're saying. If you're saying that a team doesn't need to be pulling all in the same direction in order to achieve the best results then I'd have to disagree. If you're saying I have no proof about this particular incident I just point to all the reports from insiders during that period. Hell, I couldn't even believe it myself at the time.

Ponder was the scrub of the scrubs. Let's see what he does against the top D units of teams.

He was playing against the second team, not the grocery baggers.

to be fair, JaMarcus Russell could have completed that TD pass Ponder threw. still, 7/8 with no picks is pretty good.

Patrick Willis? I remember him, he's the guy that led the Niners to a losing 6-10 record in 2010.

Do you remember Coach Harbaugh? He's the guy that taught those 6-10 losers how to win. :thumbup

You seem really obsessively focused on simple numbers for a very complex system. I really invalidates all of your opinions in the discussion. :dunno

It was Pre-Season nonsense, but Ponder did look remarkably good out there. It is nice to know that Gabbert will have a sturdy back up they can count on. :laughing
