The Official 2016/2017 NFL Thread

Dude, I was in a Niners pizza joint when that game was on. LOL, there was ONE guy in a Jets jersey in the place and I said, "look, bro, this game keeps going on like this, you are going to have to take me to the hospital when these guys lose it." Then it all fell apart. I was seriously taunted by a fucking 8 year old. :laughing

How could Jeremy Shockey be in 2 places at once?

(BTW, that 8 y/o is now 22 or 23 and probably telling the story of how he laughed at a NY Giants fan when he was a kid.)

Can you imagine being born in about 1955 and a NY Giants football fan? The first 25 cognizant years of your life, your pathetic team is the laughingstock joke of the NFL. History is a harsh mistress. :wow

Every so often I see Herm Edwards around town, he grew up in Seaside, went to Monterey HS, his daughter goes to Santa Catalina, a private school in Monterey, and all I can think of is "The Miracle at the Meadowlands".

Every team has that, the Raiders have "Immaculate Reception" and "The Tuck", the Colts have "The Ghost to the Post", Dallas has to live with "The Catch", but none of those are even close to the level of ineptitude, complete football inadequacy, as the single play that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. :laughing

wasn't impressed by preseason game 2 for the Raiders top units. They have some work to do.

and another problem: the media has basically inked the Raiders into the playoffs already. The hype around this team is going to be a heavy burden. They won't sneak up on anyone. I wouldn't be surprised if we see 8-8 and out of the playoffs, or even 7-9. There's some harsh travel, and it's not the easiest schedule. I'm a bit concerned.

Those eastern time zone games :facepalm... Tennessee and Baltimore games could be pivotal, Tennessee has improved their running game & line substantially to help Mariota, but Baltimore still seems to having some issues with Flacco's health and contract. If they have another down year I wouldn't be surprised if Jim Harbs loses his job.

I would think staying in Florida for the Jacksonville and Tampa games would be a smarter approach.

Nah, it isn't that hard to understand, because the Giants came out of the gate with greatness for decades. It would be kind of like most Raiders or Dolphins or Bears fans are now, you know? Like, you know there was some period of greatness from before you were born, but that shit hasn't been in sight since your dad or your granddad's time, so you just cling to some distant memory of relevance based on a geographical loyalty till it comes around again and for the Giants it did after that awful 15 year or so run or pure stank when football in general was just bad. I mean, hell, the Bears are still one of the most Championship winning teams of all time.

What is harder for me is grasp is like the Lions, or Bucs, or Bengals fans, who kind of have always lived in a vacuum of perpetual suck. You sort of just have to be from there and have some kind of fierce geographical pride to maintain that tribal loyalty, I guess.

I mean, WTF is the deal with the Jets? They suck, they perpetually lose, how long can some motherfuckers talk about Joe Namath? Jesus. Talk about a pile of sad sacks.

I picture Eldrich sitting in a big leather super-villain chair going, "good, good." with an evil laugh when I read reports like this.

Eagles Kicker Out With Concussion After Getting Hit In The Head With A Stray Punt

Yes, except anyone with experience with Eagles Fans knows that everyone else is the good guys. :laughing

But maybe I do have a super villain chair I sit and laugh in...

Green Bay is in the CST? :dunno

I have to say the Raiders looked soft in the middle of their D. But look at who they were playing? All it told me is that the Raiders may be moving in an upward trajectory, but they are not SB quality right now.

30 years of shit doesn't go Superbowl Overnight. This is in no way, shape, or form, a team that could beat the Pats in the playoffs right now, but I feel like this is a team on the right track with a winning future ahead of them.

I agree, 100%

Not thinking SB, but playoffs, maybe a spoiler win?

Didn't get to watch last night, only saw a few hi-lights, but even against the Cards there were mistakes, but even last night there was good, Cooper's catch on a thread the needle pass by Carr, that special teams TD (albeit late, against guys that probably won't make the 1st cut)... I'm looking at the schedule B4B was referencing.

I dunno, man. The climb to the top in the NFL is so slippery. Look at the 9ers? Close to a decade of suck, four years of decent play, and straight back to the suck. And it doesn't have to be the FO that fucks it all up. Players come and go so quickly there is no way to rely on keeping a team together for any length of time. It's one of the reasons I was so pissed when the 9ers let Harbs go.

I think they are in good shape to compete in their division. Especially with the retirement of Manning in Denver. Their D is set to take on the division and some of the conference. But as the competition gets stiffer what I saw last night shows they are going to struggle against teams that have solid run games.

I hope the injury to Mario Edwards isn't serious.

It's reported as "not long term", for whatever that's worth:

It's hard to say what will make them struggle at this point: strong defenses, high-powered offenses, etc. Each game is a marathon, so giving up the TD on the first drive doesn't necessarily mean they were destined to lose the game. But it wasn't a great sign, for sure.

agreed with you previous post re: defense a little soft. offense was very vanilla as well. all in all, it seems like the team needs more time to gel as a cohesive unit.

I'm hoping the playcalling on both sides of the ball was made intentionally standard, so as to not show anything to regular season opponents. This is pretty common. But it would have been nice to see them stop GB on the first drive. Lacy looked pretty good out there.

That's part of it for sure. But they got gashed in the run game.
They are set for coverage and pressure but the run D is the question mark. It will most likely hold up against the teams in their division and even in the conference. But the NFC has more teams, quality teams, with solid run games and balance.

Well, I feel like the Niners right now are kind of a Godwin, you know? Like, that was such a savage and almost intentional destruction of the team by the Owners that I don't even know what to make of it. That winning period was built over years of development; I can remember specific conversations I had with guys at the bar during the Singletary period that there is some shit wrong that this team is not winning more games based on the talent on their roster alone. They built talent up for years and underperformed, continuing to scoop up good draft pics, so it just APPEARED like Harbs was a magic wand, when really, he inherited a bad ass roster of talented players on both sides of the ball. When they burned off the good coach and then all the players quit as a result. Total annihilation of a kind that is pretty unheard of outside of a Chip Kelly team…

Mmmm...I don't know if I can get totally on board with this.
Yeah, they had good talent...finally. Remember the 9ers were in salary cap purgatory until 2007 (?). They didn't have too many years of holding on to good talent before Harbs arrived. Add in the fact that the folks in charge of managing talent up until 2009 or so did a piss poor job of it and it's more understandable that Harbs deserves the credit for getting the most out of what he was given. And if that's the case then three trips to the conf champ and one to the SB in four years means he could have kept this team performing at an extremely high level regardless of the talent he was provided.

Anywho...I think they'll do okay this year. The schedule looks beastly but strength of schedule seems to have tapered off over the season in past years due to injury and player movement. And to some teams playing above their level (I'm looking at you, Cards). They are still in a trough which means there is no way to go but up. Or sit in the dumps.

Harbaugh is a born leader of men. He walked in the door, told the fucked-up Niners locker room to get their heads of their asses or they'd be kicked off the team. Probably threw some trash cans around like a drill sergeant too. :laughing

Players were like "yes sir, coach." Instant leadership, the players pulled together, because a T-E-A-M and started winning games.

Alex Smith, woeful career QB rating of 67.2 prior to Harbaugh. Coach Harbaugh arrived to teach Smith how to approach the QB position, BOOM instantly Smith has a QB rating of 97.4 for his (almost) 2 years under Harbaugh's leadership.

Every NFL team has talent...the players would not be in the NFL otherwise. Only the well-coached teams are taught how to be winners.
