The sailing nerd-out thread

How long does it take to rig up for use?
I started with Hobies, and migrated to short sail boards
I would love to have a sailing dink, Az's lack of water, , ,

Tthe first time we launched and unfolded took nearly 4 hrs, as I was OCD over every step. The second time was about 2hrs. Those who do it all the time, can get it down to >40min if the boat is just being stored mast-up on the hard. Launching takes even less, with the mast up.

The difficult part is finding places to keep a boat on the hard in the Bay Area. We lost a ton of options over the last 15years.

I keep Stingray folded on the water in a slip at Richmond Marina Bay. I use an air dock lift it out of the water, to keep the hull pristine. It takes about 3min to unfold the amas, when we leave the dock and the same time to fold up before docking.

“Charlie Dalin on the race boat MACIF Santé Prévoyance has won the Vendée Globe 2024-25, and in the process has destroyed the previous record—which was set by Armel Le Cléac'h on Banque Populaire VIII in the 2016-17 edition of the race at 74 days, 3 hours and 36 minutes—meaning that Dalin has taken a staggering 9 days, 8 hours, 12 minutes and 57 seconds off the previous reference.”

congratulations to Mr Dalin! 🥳

the starlink daily update videos on YouTube were pretty epic on that race!

yes, I enjoyed the reports from the boats during the race!

I'm hoping I'll be able to find more VG drone/mucic videos, now that the race is winding up:

just spectacular sailboats to behold/watch ... :ride

“The Weekend Sailor is an inspiring documentary about the Mexican yacht Sayula II in the first-ever Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race in 1974. Winner of multiple international film festival awards … A must-watch for sailing, adventure, and endurance fans.”

Our former neighbors at Coyote Point, Tim & Sandy are/were members of that club. Tell them Bill & Carole say, "Hi!"

Your description sounds as advertised by Tim during conversations about the non-harbor specific club.

...and I miss our boat.

We just joined the South Bay Sailing Club; I am told it is a drinking club with a sailing problem.
What type of boat are you sailing, Butch?
Or are you just there for the stories and fluids? :laughing

I would love to go out in a laser again. I sailed a Snark a bunch and did the bareboat thing in the BVI. That was a 38 Ben towel I think. I love these voice recognition stuff.

Wow, memory lane for me.
I went through the John Berry Sailing School in Berkley when I was 10. I began racing El Toro's in the SBRA from there. I graduated to a Laser when I was 13. Sailing that little hot rod on the turbulent San Francisco Bay made me the competent sailor I am today. I seriosly doubt I could even step the mast into that little boat now, due to my knees and back.
That's why I have a Kiwi 30 now. :teeth

...and the Snark! I remember those. I believe they were made from Styrofoam :wtf.
I think they gave those away as a Kool cigarette promotion too.
I haven't thought about those things in years.

I spent a decade crewing on Schooner Alma. Here we are carrying the 2002 Olympic Torch from Jack London to the Hyde St pier.

I'm envious, Jeff.
I believe I've set foot on that boat. Super cool.
IIRC, wasn't it used to transport goods up the Petaluma River? (among other things...)
Or am I thinking of another one? The ship in my mind had a black hull?
I believe the Alma is white.
Where am I going wrong?

I think I have fired cannons at the Alma from the schooner Aldeberan. Has she participated in reenactments off of Angel island?

We got a Kool Snark when I was 11. I think it was $88 and two Kool cigarette carton ends. It was Styrofoam and we put fiberglass on the hull. It was much faster than an El Toro.
