The sailing nerd-out thread

I thought so, too. Sounds like it starts with a bad idea, and then just goes downhill from there.
So....we watched it over the weekend. It's free with Amazon Prime.
No spoilers here, unless the ending of the Titanic was a spoiler for you......kinda the same thing. The story isn't the result, it's what led up to that result that's the story.
I confess I tend to hate these kinds of movies. There have been more than a few about bad days on the water and frankly I have better things to do than watch someone suffer for 90 minutes. That was refreshingly not the case with this film.
We found it to be "lean forward" TV during the scenes that led up to him being on the water. His time on the water was also extremely well done, leaving many of the painful details of his situation up to your imagination. I, for one, have a powerful imagination and can easily conjure up images Hollywood would only look silly trying to create. That, and the dialogue, are the movies strengths.
I found it worth my time and think it would be worth yours too. In fact, I kinda hope you do watch it. I have a few questions I'd like to bounce off you.
I respect the opinion of #sailingmoviecriticchick

I have a couple of survival suits for any of our serious offshore sailers.

@gixxerjeff Will try to watch tonight and report back. I’m more interested in watching it now after your thorough and positive review. Thanks!

Until you find yourself in a tacking duel. :thumbup
Not so much, Tris point high, maintain their speed and tack on a dime - they are nothing like cats in this respect.

enjoyed "The Mercy" movie, too ... watched it last night based on the recommendations here, with my wife, who had absolutely no idea what to expect--so seeing her shocked reaction near the ending, when it became clear to her what kind of movie we were watching, was amusing.

here's a trailer for the hour-and-a-half documentary from the "Touching the Void" people, about Mr Crowhurst:

We watched The Mercy last night, too! I agree with you, gixxerjeff...great dialogue, especially the beginning. The quiet moments were the most telling, though. The telephone receiver, the climb up the mast... I enjoyed the on the water scenes, too, even though they made me extremely uncomfortable. I think if the "thing" hadn't gotten so big and out of hand, what with the high-pressure PR guy and the cut-throat sponsor, he might be around today to tell a different tale. Total shame, that.

Hard to fathom a boat being ok'd to sail in a race around the world with zero oversight, even in 1968. I think about all the things we had to do to get Total Eclipse ready for the Trans-Pac, and all the rules, regulations, checks, mandatory classes, etc. that were required. Just blows my mind...

Anyway, this movie got a "thumbs up" from me. I like Colin Firth, and I think he did a great job.

And a big "Thank you!" to you, John, for the link to the trailer! :applause I had mentioned to Eric after we finished the movie that it would be cool to find a documentary about Crowhurst!

We (well, I) watched the Deep Water documentary last night. Very good! If you enjoyed The Mercy at all, it is must-see viewing. Eric fell asleep immediately so I watched it myself, but I'm more than happy to watch it again with him tonight.
