The Sandman S1 - Netflix

The comic is primarily white compared to the show. There were quite a few gender and ethnicity swaps.

Rose walker and her family are white in the comic, as is death, Lucien the librarian as well(who’s also male in the comic).

Dreams lover who was In hell, is black in both show and comic, a pre-history African queen.

Lyta’s husband hector, the dead man of mixed race ethnicity, is white in comic (with an entirely

Story)

Oof, that's a bummer. Representation is great unless it's just representation as cannon fodder. Excusing the folks pivotal to the conclusion, most of the folks killed in the season were Black. It's interesting that the characters pivotal to the conclusion of this season almost all Black, and I wonder if there will be meaning drawn from that. The arc of Gault, while short, I assume will be interesting in the future.

Eh, I didn't see it that way. They were characters that died.

Didn't give it a second thought that they were black nor do I think it matters.

I appreciate your perspective s a longtime fan of the series.

from my view, it just seemed really tough to ignore- it just seemed most of the extremely violent things happened almost exclusively to people of color. If they were characters that had their race changed for the show, that really sucks.

I honestly didn't even notice until you said something and I thought back through the series.

I mean, in a horror movie, the black people usually die but that's horror movie trope. Hell, I'll always joke that my friends should take me along when doing sketchy shit. As long as I'm alive, they're safe. You can worry after I'm gone.

But here, they were just characters that died that happened to be black.

Not saying your perspective is wrong just offering a different one. We all see things differently.

This is why I hate discussing media these days. It’s the new Godwin. No matter what; the discussion invariably turns to deciding whether certain demographics play an important role in the eyes of the viewers or not. Fuckin everything has to be a culture war battlefield

Despite being based on a comic that had non binary main characters and transgender main characters in 19 freaking 89…

No, not for Death. She is supposed to represent someone very specific.

She's the representation of Death, who (like Dream) probably will look different to different people, localizing her image to whoever sees her. I'd imagine if Desire appeared to an alien, they wouldn't look like a human.

Apropos of nothing but this reminds me of Robert Kirkman (creator of Walking Dead and Invincible) who wrote a one-off character - Freedom Ring, who he meant to debut and immediately kill off to show that not everyone who lucks into powers works out swimmingly.

He then decided there weren't enough gay characters in Marvel, and wrote him as a gay man without that being his defining characteristic - he was a normal dude who happened to be gay.

Someone then pointed out that he, effectively, created a gay character to murder in an aggressive and bloody way.

...oops. Best laid plans and all that.

“Wait if Daredevil is a blind guy who can see doesn’t this just make him a normal guy?”

“He also has a sick he throws at people”

“Oohhh a stick”

Nay, Bruh, the character is supposed to be a specific representation of a specific model who died.

You know, there have been threats from legit Hollywood characters of a sequel for years now, but it never seems to get traction. Maybe it will happen?

I honestly was not super impressed by Reeves as Constantine, and would probably even put him below Matt Ryan's portrayal, but Peter Stormare's Satan was SO GOOD.

It was really the whole thing all around, even the Indiana Jones'esque sidekick LaBeouf, that made it fun. It definitely wasn't some mediocre thing carried to cult status by Keanu. And I'm fine with all of that. Aim to recapture the total package and people are in.

Yeah, I agree, the Director really painted an excellent picture. I think Herr Lawrence was one of the guys stumbling around some rumors, but he is busy making more Hunger Games movies for at least a little while longer.
