This might be a bad idea: the evidence

The vacuum petcock doesnt work properly so itll only run in "prime" aka reserve. Also, one of the float valves seems to leak a little, so after leaving the bike parked for a couple days and losing half a tank of gas to that combination I decided to FixTheSymptomsAndNotTheProblem
Went to a manual petcock?

The autos are famous for leaking. The little "O-ring" in the autos fails after about a decade. A $1 part readily available but I like the manuals. They never fail...

I've had manual petcocks fail.

I've had manual petcocks fail.

I have had a couple manual fail as well, but nothing like old vacuum autos - detest them.
But then again, I'm old and like manual override and start and stop procedures.

.

nope. the tape with a note on it is the fix for now. the failure mode now is that "run" is off, and "prime/reserve" is run... but i have no reserve is the risk. i might get crazy and pull the carbs AGAIN, to see if i can fix the float valve for some measure of redundancy.

if i keep the bike i'll convert to an aftermarket manual. these can be repaired but from what i've read they are prone to re-fail.

I'm confused.
I thought vacuum petcock don't have an "off" so how are you stopping the leak @ the carbs when parked?

"prime"- all gas all the time, bypasses vacuum

And the two that act on vacuum, which the diaphragm often fails and then acts like prime:
"On" and reserve.

Just add an inline valve and be done.with it., leave the petcock in prime.

some bikes have petcocks that're manual + vacuum

off = off
on = on if vacuum is applied
prime = on

that's what this is, as opposed to the 97suzuki i had that was vac only, couldn't even see the thing and had a gas idiot light.

i do have an inline valve i could put in there, it's kinda small though.

Ah, I just reread his last post, prime and reserve are the same. Odd.
So he has a shutoff to off and the vacuum diaphragm failed into off mode.
Only on is prime.
Nevermind my inline shutoff reading comprehension fail.

yep, i didn't explain it all that well. turns out y'all can't read my mind over the internet. i should probably try applying vacuum to that port with the sucky bleeder mity-vac knockoff before completely writing it off. the signal hose from the carb could be obstructed in the port.

haven't done much more to the bike other than tidying up some electrical (relatively speaking. it's a rat nest but has plenty of zip ties!)

riding it around some as i have time hoping any major issues pop up before friday.

i also got some keys cut because Know Thyself, i've lost plenty i don't want to be stranded trying to hotwire my bike to get home because i'd surely burn it down to the ground.

still ahvent' really gotten the clutch action the way i like it. but it's adjusted per the manual at least, it was pretty wonky before that. probably needs a new cable and maybe some friction plates to get the throw where i like it. not a show stopper so it can wait.

i have a borrowed little tent, digging out the cold weather snowboarding gear, as well as my thong because it's supposed to be warm during the days this weekend... as if i know where we're going. i don't. just guessing we won't be making it to oregon, nevada, or santa barbara at least.

see yall sunday?

Made it
Much fun was had
Pics: packed up ready to go Friday
Proof of burnout

It's a baby burnout, I had to get back down to santa Clara still and the clutch is likely about done

Next year, I plan to do more to the bike... now to look for one and start planning
