Toyota to move HQ to Texas

Re Wazzu's post: I would have a hard time listening to a foreigner run down any state in the union period because I have little patience with ungrateful wretches. As for within the country, California has lost a lot of what made it very livable when I was young. The best difference is that our air is cleaner now.

It's my home and I love its history and my place in it, but man, I would not recommend coming here to any person unless they have superior economic tools to survive. And I do feel that ominous sense of being priced out of just about anywhere I would want to live.

To me, a place that is a great place to be rich or at least wealthy, is not that big of a challenge. Having a place where the modest survive with dignity is. I just don't feel the passion by most of our local leaders to commit to widespread livability. We are stuck in the paradigm of enclaves versus everywhere else. Watching our local hospital flounder (Doctor's in San Pablo) is very troubling. When you reach the point that only prosperous areas have hospitals, you have lost the game. (add to above considerations about housing costs, traffic, etc etc as a disincentive to run a factory here). We don't seem to have a grounded civil concept of livability.

Even the most basic tools for economic survival, like BART, are truly dysfunctional. We can't seem to get our shit together about anything. If other states have that, well, good for them.

Our state govt seems to be in shambles. Three Senators indicted. A governor who is trying to raid other income sources to keep his stupid fast train proposal afloat even while he supports LESS transparency in government.

I talked about cellphone theft on the political thread. If you have a chance to keep someone from getting mugged for their smartphone, why wouldn;'t you vote for it? You are supposed to be concerned with citizen welfare....

They don't manufacture anything here anymore anyway and I'll bet money that the prices of their vehicles will remain the same even though they're claiming the cost of business will be going down. No change for the consumer. Who cares? Bye! :wave

Not sure why you hate capitalism

Not ignoring that union wages can mean higher prices for consumers, but ignoring the fact that when conflicts end, the ongoing support fund isn't returned to the taxpayer. But, as always, one type of raping is fine while another isn't because I'm partial to it, 'Murica being so infallible and all that.

Are you suggesting that people (er...I mean corporations) aren't getting a big enough tax break as it is? Man I must be such a dickwad expecting everyone to pay their fare share in this country.

I recall one major Japanese mfg passing on Texas and opening their plant in Ontario, Canada because even though the costs would be higher it would save them money because the locals were far better educated and Federally provided health care.

Yes I am. Fair share is such a wonderful ambiguous phrase. It ranks right up there with "common sense" and "reasonable", which if course if you enjoy our government, pretty much includes anything you can think of.

Then we'll just have to agree to disagree.

muuuuuuuch lower cost of homes.

Sounds like you never considered moving to good parts of Austin. It is as expensive, or more, than nicer parts of California.

As for Toyota, it made sense to be closer to their manufacturing centers with or without tax benefits. That they leveraged their name in getting even more tax benefits speaks to their business shrewdness.

.

LOL, one city in Texas (and one of the smaller ones to boot).

And besides, how many $2.5 million homes in Austin only have 2,000 sq ft, like is often the case here? If you pay that much in Austin, you'll get 4,000 sq ft minimum, and in a gated community too.

they will certainly notice the weather change from the south bay (the real one!) the traffic suck balls down there.

honda is already looking to move in the next several years. I know someone praying for a good buy out package....

Nissan North America moved theirs out of Gardena, to Franklin, Tennessee a number of years ago.

If Honda is planning their move, that leaves Mazda, down in Irvine. How soon before they go?

There is already a massive Honda presence in Ohio already. The largest engine manufacturing facility (1M+ engines annually), a transmission plant, motorcycle plant, two giant auto plants, a lot of American Honda powertrain engineering is done there, along with the massive TRC (test facility), and one of the biggest parts DCs in the company.

All that's really in Torrance is sales/marketing, some R&D, and all the suits since it's AHM HQ.

toyota is moving the whole thing.....out by 2017.

AHM's dealer tech support is in torrance/gardena
