Re Wazzu's post: I would have a hard time listening to a foreigner run down any state in the union period because I have little patience with ungrateful wretches. As for within the country, California has lost a lot of what made it very livable when I was young. The best difference is that our air is cleaner now.
It's my home and I love its history and my place in it, but man, I would not recommend coming here to any person unless they have superior economic tools to survive. And I do feel that ominous sense of being priced out of just about anywhere I would want to live.
To me, a place that is a great place to be rich or at least wealthy, is not that big of a challenge. Having a place where the modest survive with dignity is. I just don't feel the passion by most of our local leaders to commit to widespread livability. We are stuck in the paradigm of enclaves versus everywhere else. Watching our local hospital flounder (Doctor's in San Pablo) is very troubling. When you reach the point that only prosperous areas have hospitals, you have lost the game. (add to above considerations about housing costs, traffic, etc etc as a disincentive to run a factory here). We don't seem to have a grounded civil concept of livability.
Even the most basic tools for economic survival, like BART, are truly dysfunctional. We can't seem to get our shit together about anything. If other states have that, well, good for them.
Our state govt seems to be in shambles. Three Senators indicted. A governor who is trying to raid other income sources to keep his stupid fast train proposal afloat even while he supports LESS transparency in government.
I talked about cellphone theft on the political thread. If you have a chance to keep someone from getting mugged for their smartphone, why wouldn;'t you vote for it? You are supposed to be concerned with citizen welfare....
