Vegetarian Food Thread

Was thinking of starting a "healthy eating thread" before this popped up, now I dunno. This one is too specific I suppose..?

As I enter the September years of my life with one foot in the coffin and the other nearing a banana peel, I find that I don’t need to eat a steak or a chicken but rather eat something with similar taste and texture. Its healthier and I’m not contributing to the abuse of animals.

I’m not 100% vegan/veg but a portion of my diet is v/v.

Though I still eat butter, cheese, yogurt, I stopped drinking milk after viewing the “milk documentary.” Dairy cows are abused and I’m not a calf so why should I drink a cow’s milk?

Milk gets you swoll brah! Important to know about the inflammation from milk. And always good to have an allergy panel done.

Energy density addiction is real. Milk is on that list.

Very nice looking sandwich Cabrito!

Anyone want to guess on this one?

lol - showed cabrito’s pic to my SO, and said OMG, look at this ADORABLE dog. his response ‘that is a fucking awesome looking sandwich!’

OP - GREAT thread! thanks so much for starting it! am not veg or vegan, but moving in that direction. previously followed the non-bbq thread, but HH killed it for me with his recent octopus pics. was horrified. that creature is a very hard line for me.

looking forward to inspiration and ideas from this thread. :thumbup

Has anyone tried those grow kits for mushrooms? I found one for Lions Mane Mushrooms. And to be relevant to this thread, has anyone cooked with them and would like to share some of their recipes for it that you've tried?

https://smallhold.myshopify.com/products/lions-mane-grow-kit

A couple of things.

1. Yes. The kits work well if you follow the directions. You won't get a ton, but it's fun and they are good.

2. It might be winding down and this wind doesn't help. But the lions mane mushroom grows wild around here and is plentiful in the bay, especially south bay right now. It's been a fantastic year for that mushroom. Look on oak trees.

3. They are great. Simple saute with butter or oil, some garlic etc.

Interesting:

“Meat Loaf was a vegetarian from 1981 to 1992. In 2019, he tried becoming a vegan. He once said, ‘There have been vegetarians who wouldn't speak to me because of my name.’ In fact, he was a big fan of singer k.d. lang and wanted to meet her but he says she refused because of his name. He says he stopped being a fan after that.”

Maybe I should change my BARF to leaf.

Had a brief stint as a vegetarian yet never ate tofu. The current choices of fake burgers I don’t find all that appealing and kindof don’t get the point. If you don’t want to eat meat then why eat fake meat.

I had to eat constantly and still was losing too much weight. Was too time consuming so threw in the towel. However it did set me a on course of better eating habits ever sense.

i like the veggie burgers that taste like a veggie burger. the ones where they try to simulate meat gross me out.

get the ‘losing too much weight’ bit though. have dropped a lot over the past 2 years. weigh the same now as i did in 7th grade (was skinny as a kid). my SO is starting to bitch about it - says i’m skin and bones. been working out though - so i’m like - fuck off - there’s muscle there too :laughing

Crappy pic, but we had some (vegetarian) paella for dinner last night

I think there are two main reasons why people stop eating meat; health and moral. Totally agree on the health side, why bother, but the moral box is still checked.

Muscle weight? If I remember correctly, you're a pretty fit dude. :drool :p

Hey bro :Port

This was back in the day mid 20’s. Went total vegan was getting leaner and skinnier no matter how much I ate. Dropped below 140# and decided it wasn’t for me.
Animals are cool and all that but I was simply motivated by potential health benefits to address frequent headaches.
Before that I had atrocious eating habits and since I eat everything but avoid certain combinations. Rarely ever get headaches anymore.

Heyooooo!

Right on. It's funny because you probably didn't have to make such a massive change to the diet to help with headaches, but it probably really benefitted you to do so.

Getting endlessly skinnier was probably part of the change in nutrient density. You have to eat A LOT to maintain body mass, especially if you're muscular. Plus you really have to go out of your way to find high density vegan foods. It usually involves lots of beans and poops reminiscent of farm life.

I'm still a good 50lbs overweight and have always struggled with eating, but I think I'm getting there, mentally speaking. Patience has been key for me, taking the long approach and not feeling too discouraged with "failures". Like the stock market, just establish a trend and live with the dips.

I suspect obesity amongst vegetarians is a rarity.
I’d say give it a shot for anyone trying to lose weight.

Was likely unnecessary on my part just to address headaches
