Veteran Cuts Down Mexican Flag

For -----(insert immigrants from X here) to come from an impoverished country to better themselves and to fly the flag of another country above their home or business is very very very hard for me to understand. I would seriously like to know if these same people honestly feel they are worse off here than from where they came from. Show some gratitude dammit!!!!!!

Well, you have to understand, for the Mexican immigrant community a SIGNIFICANT % of them have no interest in becoming Americans or even operating within our laws. They just want our money, that is all. They come here, live on a bare ass minimum, send money back home to have their house built or save up to buy a business back home. Once they feel they have built up a significant enough nest egg for whatever their plan is, they go back home to live out their days in as comfortable a fashion as they have been able to arrange. I've been running construction companies for years and am always seeing guys cycle out because they have enough money to go home. They have no interest in becoming a part of what we are, they just want to use resources that we have available. It's one of the main reasons that immigration reform is such a hot button issue these days.

Well STOP hiring the cheap labor then, they're also putting food on your table. People like yourself dont want to pay the going rate of labor for an american.

I agree with the flag issue, that no other flag should be above the American flag in this country and I'm sure they didn't do it to harm anyone. Maybe they weren't aware of the law, but some people here on barf are just far too ignorant and start insulting.

aside from anything else, props to the OP for posting up the flag etiquette :thumbup

many of us in the military consider the flag to be the ultimate symbol of patriotism/sacrifice and for the flag to be dishonored in any way will be taken as an insult. It's more than just a piece of fabric/cloth, and should always be treated as such.

You live in this country, you honor that flag. End of story. :flag

well...to clarify and expand on Eldritch's response...I made a mistake by saying I do not understand why immigrants feel the need to fly their flag over their homes etc....regarding the Mexican community, I am VERY familiar with their situation. I am the only non Mexican in an extended Mexican family, I speak Spanish, and the great majority of my "clients" are non English speaking folks from Mexico. I do realize many of them are transient and are here merely for financial reasons.

However, I cannot condone the appearance of flagrant unchecked arrogance in the form of flying the flag of another country on top of their residence/business on US soil on a regular basis.

I know a couple of Mexican immigrants who are here without papers and I can truly call them personal friends. I have talked with them at length about this and their opinion is quite different than the majority. They have no Mexican flags displayed on their home, cars,no anywhere else. they also don't display bumper stickers of "La Raza" radio station on their cars. They feel "low key" is the right way to go considering they are here without papers. Humility is one thing....arrogance is another.

It used to irritate me when I was in the Navy and the "African-Americans" would buy a cruise jacket that had the African Flag on top of the American Flag....and get away with it (seeing how it was the MILITARY and were there to defend the American flag, not the African flag) :x

Or we can all stop being so self centered and start realizing that we are in a massive global economy and should be helping each other, not fighting about paying the guy 5 miles away (in my case) $5 less to do a crap job that the my next door neighbor won't do because he is too good for it.

There's an African flag?

the clothing made in Stars and Stripes pattern really bugs me. Put a flag pin on your swimsuit, but don't make your g-string out of it (or do-rag, or streched out wifebeater that barely covers your beer gut...)

+1

There's an African flag?

Yep...it's called the Pan-African flag.

Well that about sums it up, and says it plain as plain can be. +1 to you, and thanks.

To the rest of the Immigrants, that are all too proud of their heritage.. Please do me a fucking favor. Now that you are "well off" take your savings, AND GO THE FUCK BACK WHERE YOU CAME FROM.

That is all.....

/soapbox

Really? So if you have to move for whatever reason to another country [like job or school or family] you would imediately forget you are an american and completely 100% deny your national heritage?
Or this rule only applies to those not chosen by god to be born americans eh?

I am and always will be proud to be romanian. Werever I live won't change that.

I hope there was no ill intent by the shop owner and it was just a lack of knowledge.

I do understand the Vet's reaction. I'm glad he did what he did and I'm very glad it got some press.

+1 agreed...

some folks (well..majority of what ive known from) do not know the right way to treat a U.S. Flag

so :thumbup to the Vet!

Is the Romanian flag flying over your house here in the USA? Is the Romanian flag draped over your car and being driven around during Romanian holidays? Is your Romanian language music being "shared" at high volume during these holidays?

Well all of the above applies to others and that is what is being debated here.

I learned flag etiquette as a Boyscout and know how to properly fold a flag. I respect
our flag as a symbol of American ideals and honor it. That said, another part of being
a good citizen is honoring the due process of law which means not confiscating someone
elses property. If he had simply reversed the order I could applaud, but he stole it!

I understand what you are saying and I agree. It was just that particular post I quoted I had a problem with not the whole issue.
I was born in Transilvania and over there we have a very simmilar situation with the Hungarian minority. I don't hate hungarians and in fact I had [still have some] good friends who were romanian born hungarians. But if I ever saw they're flag flying above our tricolore back in Romania I would have a serious issue too.

He was in the Army, but has a K-Bar ?

Precisely. This is a nation of LAWS, a soldier would do the right thing and CORRECT the proper flag display - not act like a thug.

Again - if the shop owner had shown any intent to deliberately disregard or disrespect the stars and bars that's one thing. I have NO beef with people honoring and celebrating their roots - whether they're from, so long as they contribute to our nation in kind.

I don't see vitriol being directed at the British pubs that feature the Union Jack, nor protests against people wearing green on St. Patrick's day, nor any condemnation of Italian flags on pizza or pasta boxes.

So I guess some flags are a little more equal than others.

I would bet that if they had ONLY flown the Mexican flag, nobody would have noticed. But since they chose to put the American Flag below it, they got that reaction. So I believe there is a difference between flying a single flag of another country, versus flying the American flag wrong.

Case in point, we flew an American flag outside of a new fire station one time 24hrs a day. We didn't have a light on it. Oh boy...some veterans group game absolutely unglued on us and demanded that we either put a light on it or take it down at dusk. We put a light on it.
