What Does "High Maintenance" Mean To You

So, I was having this conversation with Planegray last night where I was telling him that one of my neighbours had commented that I must be "high maintenance"...........(based on the fact that I run and keep an impeccable household, my shit is in order etc etc)

I said I wasn't high maintenance, I have high standards that I expect myself and other people to maintain, but I don't need anyone to maintain "me" as it were.

To me, high maintenance is someone who is needy, selfish, fussy, prissy, takes forever to get things done (hair, makeup etc if female) and most often on the lookout to find someone else to be responsible to get things done, and basically just wants to be looked after by someone else.

What say you sinkers, what is your definition of high maintenance

Yeah, I'm bored, I need a jobby job that doesn't involve a damned paintbrush :p

My mom used to have a bumper sticker that read "Boring women have immaculate homes".

So you are not high maintenance, just boring. :twofinger

My definition of high maintenance is a girl who needs more time, attention, and bling than is reasonable. For example she takes longer than Rupaul to get ready to go out, and she's only going to pickup the mail. Or she's the equivalent of a Britney Spears emotional train wreck who calls fifteen times a day and when you don't give her the exact response she's looking for she involves your whole family and it's twice as many calls and drama. Every week you feel like you're jumping on Oprah's couch to prove your love for her. Or she's a Paris Hilton who has high end taste and likes to be kept in the best clothes, makeup, jewelry, eat at fine restaurants, be the scene and be seen, etc. only she doesn't want to pay for it herself so she picks rich boyfriends. The worst version is a combination of the above. (See also bad geisha, upper west side mistress, and gold digger.) Your best options are to weed out these leeches a via litmus test administered by taking her camping and leaving at home half of the needed equipment.

Wendy you are a hard working sulf-sufficient woman who takes care of her appearance and her home, that's hardly the type. :p

high maintenance to me is enduring unnecessary never-ending drama from your SO.....

I agree with most of what you have here Karin, except that they aren't necessarily gold-diggers. That part seems to garner the largest negative response (and rightly so). But the non-materialist part is just as bad.

To me (based on my vast unfortunate dating experiences), a person is high maintenance when they need constant attention and reassurance (due to insecurity previously mentioned). The other piece is the need for others to live up to their standards and attempt to control the other person. When you combine the two, I run quickly the other direction....

Wendy certainly isn't high maintenance....a pain in the ass, sure...but not high maintenance :p I keed, I keed! Hi Wendy! :wave

It seems to me that if you're keeping your business in order and maintaining a clean home, you're the opposite of high maintenance.

I don't like camping. I don't like bugs or dirt. I spend a lot of time making my home, my workplace and myself clean and organized. If someone wanted to take me camping to determine if I was high-maintenance, they would get a skewed result.

Incidentally, and I'm not naming names here, but I know a lot of guys who are the embodiment of high-maintenance according to the definitions set forth here. In fact, I know very few women who don't take care of their own careers, homes, shopping, personal problems, etc. Let's not pretend this is purely female trait, mmkay?

Seems like both of you arnt high maintenance, just obsessive compulsive. To some men maybe this is high maintenance?

But, from everything that I've seen you post here, it doesn't seem that you would ever forego sex because it would require you to fix you hair and/or make-up afterwords. So clearly you would never be accused of being high maintenance! :cool

a woman that expects a man to remember her name in the morning = high maintenance :thumbdown
