When guns become a fetish.

Interesting (but LONG) read here - I just came across this link in an unrelated thread on Calguns, but it's the only other time I've seen the term fetish used. The relevant paragraph to "gun fetishes" is quoted but really the whole article is a good read.

I am not talking about guns but gun rights. This is not about whether anybody likes or dislikes guns, and certainly nobody should fetishize them. It is unfortunate that, as with many debates in this country, the gun-rights debate is cast in the media as a clash between two extremely silly camps – those who fetishize guns positively, and those who fetishize them negatively. For there to be a serious political debate, both of these attitudes really have to be recognized, and dropped, by those who inhabit them. I don’t own a gun. I’m not defending my gun. I’m defending my right.

let it die already...I think she hasn't been online for a while since that post and props to her for not engaging in a giant flameout which many were hoping for.

I've defended her words regarding firearms in the past, being one of the more 'control oriented' gun owners here and all, but i think she just meant to drop a turd in the punchbowl...

I also think she probably quit, or will sooner than later quit riding/barf. I know a dilettante when i see one.

I'd like to think you're wrong. I'll just hope she comes back with a cooler head and a more open mind.

I'll leave this here for you to understand better:

I was, in the past, a middle of the road "Reasonable regulation" gun owner. I didn't mind registration for firearms, training requirements, even paying for and passing tests, I didn't mind magazine limits, bans on specific types, etc, etc, etc.

The problem is, the Liberal Democrats in this State (and everywhere really) aren't happy with "reasonable regulation." They continue to push and push and push, redefining terms to ban such broad swaths of firearms that it's insane, redefining exactly how many bullets I "need" by further limiting magazine limits after they've already done so, redefining the terms with which a manufacturer has to pass to even sell firearms -- and when they do so, they redefine them with such strictness and ridiculuous requirements that no one can. They do this over, and over, and over again.

You know what that's made me? Along with many thousands of other "middle of the road, reasonable regulation gun owners?"

It's made me a no longer middle of the road gun owner. Now I'm an absolutist just like the Liberal Democrats who are routinely, consisntently, and without fail trying to (and succeeding!) in taking more and more of my property and rights away from me. Over, and over again. Now I'm against any kind of registration, any kind of language on "assault weapons," any kind of limitations on magazine limits, and even against charging people money to excersize their right and own a firearm.

I didn't start out this way, I didn't even want to feel this way, but when you watch people widdle away and something for decades, never happy with what they did in the past and always trying to take more, eventually you say FUCK OFF and aren't willing to give them an inch, let alone the five miles they've already taken.
