Why does Toyota not build motorcycles?

Funny, we have a family friend that works for a Lexus dealer. Go figure.

Also, I can sit here and say that just because my company's products work great for us in the shop, that means they shouldn't have any problems with the customers in the field, right? Wrong. :|

You're also aware that almost every production car pretty much is designed to have even just a little bit of understeer from the factory, right? :|

And furthermore, the understeer wasn't even my biggest gripe with that car. It's more the weight and the transmission. I frankly don't care how it works for you the mechanic. As you should already know, the only opinion that matters in the automotive industry is the customer's. If they think the product sucks, then it sucks.

How many IS-F's roll through your shop? Shit, how many do you see on the road? I could easily count more M3's on a daily basis and be at a higher number than what I see of IS-F's in a month or two. :rolleyes

Settle down, Beavis. IS F's are heavy as shit, understeer like mad and that eight-speed transmission has more trouble making up its mind than an over-caffeinated teenager. What a waste of money. Toyota builds nice cars, but not exciting cars. They can leave that the the Europeans who've been handing Toyota their ass in that department for decades.

They really aren't that way out heavy, certainly not different enough to not be competative and the understeer isn't all that different, or different at all to a person driving on the road. Now on a track, may be different, but the car wasn't designed for the track only. Most manufactures put in what they beleive to be a safe amount of understeer. Plus that wasn't even the argument, it was that Toyota doesn't have any exciting cars. Whether you like the ISF or not, it is pretty clear it was built to bring an exciting car to the Toyota fold, same with the LFA. Never mind past excitment like the 2000GT of long ago, or the MR2 and even the hopped up Celica were both geared more towards being driver's cars.

As for the consumer opinion, I don't know the numbers, but I haven't heard anything about the ISF being a sales failure. As for the # of M3's versus ISF's that isn't really a fair comparison. How long has the M3 been in the market place versus the ISF? So that will skew the numbers. Then you have the fact that by virture of being in the market so long, you have a certain amount of aspirational sales that happen with the M3. Plus you have the perceived added panache' of BMW over Lexus. Most people probly don't compare them back to back and then make their choices.

Your postings on the IS-F and LFA lack merit.

Road testing a dealer demo or friends car for a half hour it is doubtful you got to flog it at will testing the limits of it's capabilities. We got two days with pre-production (IS-F) units. First time ever that we had to sign a waiver before being released to drive any new model. Spent the day racing each other all thru LA and the coast areas.
We were also instructed to take it into the rev limiter repeatedly to sample the fuel/ignition cut response, the car is quite impressive.
Professional feedback? Ask Scott Pruett what he thinks of the IS-F and LFA

Hopefully I will get my LFA training before the year is out.
I don't own an F because it's not practical no matter how much my discount is. The fuckers eat tires!!! And they ain't cheap. It's the reason I turned in my standard IS at the end of it's lease, went thru 2 sets :(. I prefer to spend my money on my two wheel pleasures, four wheels is just groceries getter. So I got an HS instead :p

Oh I let it go. Just figured that face would work better is all. I frankly don't care to be honest with you. I like the IS's for what they are, but BMW killer's they are certainly not. Of course that's just my opinion. But isn't that what the internet's all about anyway? :laughing

I'm with you there.
The IS-F is not without it's faults (from a wrenching stand point), no car is, but all cars are pretty damn good within their niche market. It is up to the buyer on what he's gonna love after the purchase.
 
Because you have to understand the concept of affordable fun to design a motorcycle. The fact that the Celica and MR2 sold so poorly illustrates to Toyota that their customer base doesn't purchase their fun cars and they should therefore stick to boring, economical, soulless cars. Maybe they throw in a shiny and fancy supercar every once in a while, but you don't see them designing a replacement for the Supra (the poor man's supercar).

Anyone who purchases an IS-F over an M3, a RS4, a C63 AMG, or a CTS-V is an idiot.

The MR2 and the Celica didn't sell poorly, until the end of their life cycles. Two seat mid priced sport car sales were dyeing overall in the US as people moved to trucks and SUVs. Hence the toyotas as well as RX-7, and the 300Z as well as others disapeared all around the same time. Even though all had previously sold well. The sepercharged MR2 at one point beat the then current Ferrarri in several speed measurments.

The purchase of one car over another often includes choices other than the ones you would perhaps make. It doesn't make them an idiot for having different priorities than you.
