Wildfire season thread

a lot of the east side of south lake tahoe burned ~10? years ago? right past the state line where the evac order ends. nuts

South Lake Tahoe really got nailed by the Caldor Fire last night!

It looks like a giant penis thrust through south Lake Tahoe. It looks like it advanced 4-6 miles.

Got a little on the national news last nite about Sierra ski resort.
The rubicon threatened, no idea about the evacuations shown here for South Lake.
I think it's the cry wolf thing, Ca has been burning for so long it's ho hum news, elsewhere.
I wonder if I 80 will close too
Thinking back, my October time in the Bay area the past few years have been smoky, to dodging fires.
It used to be the best month in Ca for me. The hard edge of summer heat has mellowed and a rain or two will have happened.

I think that 80 gets threatened only if the fire moves up along the Western short, it's got to jump some rocky areas to get into the forest again further north. If it does that, all bets are off and N Tahoe is screwed from what I can see of the wind patterns.

By what's currently shown on the caltopo site, the fire is about 15 miles south of the Rubicon Trail. And it's about 40 miles south of I-80.
If it burns long enough, they could be in danger. But for the moment they're clear.

I was quietly optimistic that the pass would be a big obstacle for the fire on its march to south lake.

The pass was full of trees and the win likes to blow in that direction, not to mention it was uphill to there.

Once it got past Strawberry I didn't think they had much chance of stopping it before it got to the basin.

All California national forests are closed until further notice.

It looks like the fire fighters made a stand last night and held the line. Apparently the wind died down last night which helped them quite a bit.

It's probably going to be touch and go for the next few days up there with numerous homes at stake. I really feel for the people who live there, a really crappy situation!

Note: Earlier I was mistaken about the fire, the CalTopo page missed a zoom update and had the fire map was out of sync with the page, making it look much larger than it really was. :nerd

Vegetation fire on Lucas Valley Rd today. They hit it hard and fast and it was contained within a couple of hours. I counted 7 helicopters, 3 S2B bombers and the OV-10 observation aircraft working the fire. They refueld one of Calfires new UH-60 helicopters on our ramp. I wish I had time to go over and chat. I worked on UH60s for a few years.
This is my airplane watching site. https://globe.adsbexchange.com/

Another short vid on the Caldor, a line of cars stopped in a settlement. No explanation of where this was.
I did see a road sign,< Rubicon, so I knew a view north from Tehama (sp) on 89.
National news sucks.

It looks like weather conditions are favorable to the fire fighters on the Caldor fire. Let's hope the conditions persist and they can get this thing contained.

Looks like they've held the line for 24 hours with the fire up in S Tahoe.

Low winds and the water supply very close, I would have never guessed they could accomplish that 2 days ago when the winds were pushing it.

I've been noticing that lately there is almost no coverage of the Dixie Fire.
I guess I understand how much attachment is for Tahoe so here's your brief update.
Currently almost 866,000 acres. Containment now reaching 55%
Still very active in the north and east zones. Still threatening Portola and Davis Lake area and the 395 corridor. Crews are in Lassen Park cutting down dead trees to make it safer for firefighters. I heard that it has burned almost 54% of the park but mostly in the eastern section.

Mad

I'd guess that they've pulled many of the resources from the Dixie fire to fight the Caldor fire since there are many more homes (and a lot more money) in the S Lake Tahoe area being threatened.
