What would I do assuming I believed the story? I'd tell him to slow down and let him leave.

I'm sorry but writing a citation for an infraction is not worth the guy missing his sons birth. It's an infraction, not a murder. Slow down and congrats. See ya.

give him a ride to the hospital and tow the car. :devil

For todays scenario I offer this,

You're on routine patrol when you are dispatched to an intersection where two men are fighting. Upon your arrival you see one man laying on the ground and another man holding a gun pointing at the first man. You exit your patrol vehicle, pull out your side arm, and order the man holding a gun to drop the weapon and get on the ground. He tells you that he's an undercover police officer and the man laying on the ground pulled a knife on him after a minor traffic collision.

What do you do?

you continue to order the man to action his weapon, take five steps away from the man on the ground, and then lie down without the wepaon. this doesnt really seem like a hard one to me here rel, unlike some others.

a man has a weapon pointed at another man, your job as an officer is to make sure both escape this event as unharmed as possible.

who gives a rats ass what the guy with a gun says. if he is an undercover detective, he would understand that. he should also know that now that you are here, with weapon drawn, he can back away, disarm, and then produce his idenifitcation

You'd think it's that easy, however, more cops are shot by other cops because of the confusion of who is, or isn't, a cop.

I wish I could find the youtube vid of the two cops screaming at each other on the side of the highway.

an undercover cop not in a squad car or in uniform, defers to an officer in a squad car, with a radio, in uniform, with a badge, repsonding to a call on the radio that's attached to his vest. if the idiot undercover cop doesnt realize this, he's just as dumb as the criminals who get shot and everyone says "darwin"

Shoot both of them, sprinkle crack on the black guy.

+1. And have the closest mexican steal the patrol car.

In all seriousness.... ask to see the undercovers badge. If no badge on his person, like others said, continue to order the undercover to disarm and hit the ground.

You neutralize the situation. Have the UC holster his firearm and SLOWLY show ID and badge, while keeping the suspect covered at the same time. Call for C3 Fire and Amberlamps.

.

There was a infamous shoot out that happened between FBI/BNE (pre DEA) with local narc cops in the early 70's. The local cops made a buy from the feds and both sides thought they were dealing with bad guys, especially when the guns start shooting. A friend of mine's Dad was involved in the clusterfuck.

I'd tell the guy with the gun to back away several feet from the guy who's down, put down the weapon, and slowly get out his ID. No ID, he's going face down on the pavement and the cuffs are coming out.If he's got ID, he can pick his gun back up. But I don't think it would be smart to take anyone's word for anything if I were a cop... especially if guns are drawn... :dunno

ID's can faked.....

Yeah, and if it was someone who looked 15 and was in a bar, I'd be suspicious... but I'd think there'd be a lot more planning required in faking a cop's ID... and why would that situation warrant someone having gone to that kind of trouble? Besides, once he produces the ID, can't you call it in and verify?

That's why I said neutralize the situation. If you are in a plain-clothes assignment or decided to take action off duty, one should be fully prepared to be dis-armed and/or wear silver bracelets until the dust settles. It depends on the situation.

Back in my day:afm199, we were taught not do shit unless someone was about to die or just killed. Otherwise- call it in and be a very good witness.:cool

There is a hell of a personal risk taking action in plain clothes (on or off-duty).:|

Kevin's got it right!

Buy it on EBay right now. Get a good leather Badge Wallet. They have a plastic window for you to slide your ID in like a regular wallet. Pin the badge in it and you can print an ID card on a color printer that looks 100% legit. Nobody will ask you to take the card out to see if it is actually a properly magnetized ID. SUPER EASY. You know one of the reason Hollywood is so great? Low Budget film people buy props from retail stores over the counter like everyone else. For a few hundred dollars you can have a badge, a uniform and even a replica firearm if you are the kind of guy that can't get a regular firearm legitimately and don't want to buy from a van.

Super easy.
