Bay Area students skip school to attend San Francisco climate strike

Despite the San Francisco Unified School District and other Bay Area public school districts not granting excused absences for students who wish to attend the the SF Global Climate Strike march on Friday, many parents plan to take their children to the demonstration anyway.

Spring Utting, whose daughter attends Lowell High School in San Francisco, says she understands why the SFUSD is not excusing absences for students who wish to attend the event.

"My reaction is I understand it, they lose money for each child who doesn't attend school, and there's some liability if it's not a condoned school activity," she said.

Schools lose state money for every day a student misses class, and Orinda Union School District Superintendent Carolyn Seaton told The Chronicle earlier this week her district loses $46 per student per day.

Can't blame the students across the world, adults are fucking up the world that these students will have to live in for the rest of their lives.

Young protesters around globe demand climate change action

NEW YORK (AP) — A wave of climate change protests swept across the globe Friday, with hundreds of thousands of young people sending a message to leaders headed for a U.N. summit: The warming world can't wait for action.

Marches, rallies and demonstrations were held from Canberra to Kabul and Cape Town to New York.

The "Global Climate Strike" events ranged from a gathering of about two dozen activists in Seoul using LED flashlights to send Morse code messages calling for action to rescue the earth to demonstrations around Australia that organizers estimated were the country's largest protests since the Iraq War in 2003.

In Paris, teenagers and kids as young as 10 traded classrooms for the streets. The demonstration took on a festival-like feel as bands played and kids danced in a park.

Social media knows no boundaries.

Kid isn’t skipping school, but he is going. There’s one in Morgan Hill this afternoon (after school) at City Hall. He’s not certain what his position is on the topic, but we encouraged him to go anyway. We want him to experience a rally and political action real time. He’ll be old enough to vote next year. Time to see and experience democracy.
