Never Underestimate How Gay The Surveillance State Is.

the founding fathers were, if nothing else, vehemently opposed to tyranny - in any form. IMO, if they could have possibly foreseen the future potential for government surveillance of citizens, they would have enshrined adequate protections against that in the constitution. more a function of ‘never in your wildest imagination’ than a function of ‘intent’.

If I can show that the way I'm being looked at is preventing me from attaining life, liberty or the pursuit of happiness, do I have standing? Do the amendments we already have extended far enough to cover being watched?
They generally don't extend to being watched when in public. We're almost at a counting cards argument, which isn't illegal because it's like trying to police someone's memory. Now the casinos ban it because of the way the hierarchy of rights works, but the govt can't ban it. We know its okay to be looked at in public, but we don't like the memory part. Maybe there's a compromise to be made somewhere in there.

In our daycare the kids behave themselves when they know we’re watching them.
When our backs are turned they start to act up.

Some adults are the same way.

I wish the world was full of fair-minded courteous trustworthy people with integrity who looked out for each other…

On an individual level, like Mom said: "Please and Thank You go a long way".
In general it is pretty easy to spot people with parents that taught them manners.
Some no doubt, learned them on their own but many don't give a shit.

I kind of like it when a young woman holds the door for this OG as I walk in the gym.
I am a door holding fool. :laughing

Casinos leaning on a guy on the street, videoing traffic as it passes by from a street corner.
Up pops a Los Vegas Metro cop on a corner in Laughlin Nv. telling the videographer to leave now.
"Illegal to vid from a corner". BS
Cop made it stick, told me to move along, vs jail.
Cops filling casinos under threat of arrest, clearing the streets during Laughlin Bike Week,
reload the gaming tables, more drinking, or jail !

so what’s your thrust? we’re all children? or should expect to be treated as though we were?

daycare? yeah - that’s exactly what i had in mind when i was deciding how i wanted to live my life. :rolleyes

IMHO, this goes way beyond “being looked at”

I would agree this creeps into tyranny.

The following is a breakdown of how you are spied on quietly.

Lots of public data out there between the census, voting records, homeowner records, vital records, oh and heaven forbid someone posts stuff on the internets. It really seems to come down to people being mad about remembering it and correlating it.

Tyranny shows up a couple times on this page, but is it possible to be a victim of something terrible while having no perceptible impact? It's like there's this big giant machine....but then the impact is that it knows you like motorbikes and so a cycle gear ad shows up when you're watching a YouTube video.

[Edited to keep out of KSP]

I don't think anybody cares about targeted ads.

I think the concern lies in the "what else" is going on idea, now or near future.

Tiptoeing around politics [entirely] with this, but the partnership between mega private data/social media/technology firms and [Smurfs]

and all of the possible bad that could come of that for private citizens who may be on the wrong ideological side of [Smurfs].

It's not a stretch, and it's not unlikely given the trajectories of personal data acquisition and [smurfs] around the world.

Totally agree on the trajectory, or at least it feels that way, but at the same time, when you look at poli cartoons from papers 100 years ago, they say....they're taking mah guns and jerbs! And here we are 100 years later and they're still not really taking mah guns and jerbs.

Remember the travis afb stuff where people were buying land all around there and someone was like...it's them chineses! And even here dubs started that thread saying...it's probably them chineses! Humans are predisposed to defaulting to expecting the worst.

You and I disagree about impact and that's fine. I don't think what you describe is harmless. I think it creeps and expands until we don't notice it anymore. I think the merchant class needs limits. I don't see it as "they will take our guns and jerbs." I see it a decay of culture. We agree capitalism needs limits right? Laissez-faire gets people hurt for dollars and basically enshitifies everything eventually. See all of private equity for an example. I see advertising as part of that chain of decay. IMHO that extends to real world advertising too. Why can't we slap billboards all over national parks? Why isn't the grand canyon sponsored by Patagonia? We draw lines about where, when and how hucksters get to interject into our lives and I think that is proper and we need more of it.

If anyone wants to say that American "culture" sucks and is nothing but shallow consumerism, I don't understand how they could be against strict rules and limits around advertising. I see those two things as linked. Car culture and all the policies that followed it have literally shaped the land we live on and was driven (pun intended) by marketing and effective advertising. Shaping how people think (ads) is powerful. IMHO.

Man you're absolutely riiiight there to making a sympathetic argument for the 2a folks, except it's just as much our culture as this 1a issue is. We can show a 250yo document that says they both absolutely are our culture. And then the creeping incrementalism, you're right there. There's flour, water, salt, sugar, yeast....you've got all the ingredients. Now all we've got to do is see the parallel and then support their thing so they they see the parallel and help us support our thing. Someday that's what healing will look like.

Yeah, overlap is a bitch aint it?

FWIW, As a liberal I have pretty much given up on fighting the 2a. I think the way to actually get gun control legislation is for marginalized groups to arm themselves to the teeth, organize and demonstrate. That's exactly what the black Panthers did and it ended up with the NRA supporting gun control legislation. I don't really like that fact but, I accept its the path to change in this country. The Mulford act is the blue print for gun control in America.

LMK when you want to find a way to beam our propaganda directly into the minds of our tech oligarchs!! I don't know how else to level the playing field lol.

I am shocked. /S

That someone posted political content in the KS? I'm shocked you're shocked!

I don't think anybody cares about targeted ads.

I think the concern lies in the "what else" is going on idea, now or near future.

Tiptoeing around politics as much as possible with this,

No one's tiptoeing around anything. The last several posts belong in the KSP.

Additional political commentary will get this thread locked.

I suggest that you / we avoid the even the appearance of political content.

To be painfully clear, this is an official request.
