Ya know, you could sell off a bit of your airsoft shit, and build and AR-15. Your parents wouldnt even know.... :twofinger

Shit. Mike T has lots of airsoft???

For some reason, I don't think he is actually going to get a real gun. Ever. All talk. We hear m1a and usp all day, but if he really wanted one, he'd have bought it by now. :)

Well, the sold-out and unobtainium Emerson combat karambit folder arrived today. Very nice. Since I already EDC a Leatherman Wave for work, which takes care of utility cutting needs, I think the karambit will permanently displace my EDC rotation of defensive folders -- the concept is that good.

The knife itself is well-designed and well-built. No complaints there, save for the minor nit that they should have used torx screws instead of philips. The G10 is nice and grippy... and eerily familiar. It looks like either Spyderco is the OEM on it, or perhaps they both use the same OEM.

It's not cheap at $175 on the web, but it's not a bad price. I would estimate a Spyderco or BM implementation would be $120 considering the materials and lock design, but Emerson doesn't have the economy of scale those guys are capable of achieving. In any case, Emerson warranty and customer service rep is excellent, and I have no qualms about paying a small premium to support a reputable US maker.

So, I spent some time today checking out the various 9mm pistols out there and I think I've started to narrow it down. The Glock 17 is nice but just doesn't feel quite right to me. Checked out the S&W MP and I don't like the trigger. Based on feel in my hands (no shooting time), I like the:

- Sig P226
- HK USP 9mm
- Springfield XD 9
- Taurus 24/7 9mm

I'm not sure if I like the Sig no safety design but it does seem nice to be able to cock rather than go through the double action process. The de-cocker is nice but this is the most expensive pistol of the bunch.

I've heard great things about the HK but I don't know shit about this stuff.

I like the features on the XD, good feel, grip safety, free crap with purchase and it seems priced right but I haven't heard anything.

The Taurus seems to be a copy cat of another model (can't remember which one) but the price is great and the life time warranty would be nice.

So, which one would you recommend to a new shooter looking for a reliable, easy to disassemble/reassemble pistol that isn't too finicky about ammo?

I'm going to go shoot this week at TargetMasters to get some time with each of them (if available).

Thanks!

I really like the 226, but own a HK P2000. The times I've shot the 226, I've done very well, but that's probably down to it's all-metal/alloy/whatever construction. I expect to own one at some point down the road.

The P2000 is nice, but can take some getting used to (you either love or hate the LEM trigger). The sight radius is a tad shorter than the 226, too. Mags can be found for about $10-12 online. Takedown is very easy and you don't even have to pull the trigger!

The XD9 does feel nice in-hand. . .but something about it just doesn't call to me.

They're all good. Like you said, the Sig doesn't have a safety, just a decocker, so it's as safe as a revolver. I don't like Sigs because they feel tall and top-heavy.

The 24/7 and USP have decockers and safeties, so you can decock and keep it like that, or turn on the safety so the next time you shoot you'll pull the trigger a few times before remembering to turn it off again. Although, the USP has HK's proprietary rail that doesn't work with most of the clip-on flashlights and lasers; you have to get the HK adapter, or a HK specific kit.

The XD looks like an IM smilie, and doesn't have a safety or decocker. I think it's one of the ugliest guns around, but some people like 'em.

People who have each of those guns seem to like 'em, from what I've read on gun forums. I don't think you can go wrong with any of 'em.

Personally, I'd go with the HK, so that I could post up here that I woke up one morning and just went out and bought a HK USP 9mm, AND MIKE T IS STILL GUNLESS.

Were you at Irvington Arms today? I saw a guy leaving on a blue T-Cat and it just might have been you...

Nah, believe it or not I've actually never been to IA. I know, I know.

My Thundercat is gray/black. Stalker. :laughing

im under 21 so i cant get a pistol..legally...

i think its easier for me to buy a gun (legally) and stash it (locked and hidden of course) from the parentals....kinda hard with a M1A Standard ya know? :p

Beretta fs92 or Taurus pt92. No stainless or nickel please.

I'm on a wait list. If that falls thru i'm making one from an airsoft g36 and my marlin 60.

If you do it let me know, I'm thinking about one also. Especially if you can do it with marlin hardware. We could hook up for a BARF build day.

Didja look at a browning high power? Still my fav 9mm. Just feels right in the hand and when shooting. I've had mine for years and NEVER a mis fire or jam. with many different kinds of ammo. Its the original high-cap 9mm designed in 1935? I think. Good old John Browning was a genius and I know many a gun nut who has spent a small fortune acquiring an example of each of his designs. All these newer guns have some nice features but his guns seem to always fall into the "classic example" category. The colt 1911 is his too.

Ugly? Really? What makes a gun ugly to you gun guys? I know it's personal preference but I'm curious...
