BARF Militia

Second request: Examples?

Have you seen HR1022? Pretty much if it's semi-auto and has a detachable mag, it's on the roster. I'm working on securing the last few receivers I need just in case. ;) If you want to know what they are, you'll have to come out to a Shoot-n-que. Bring .223, 7.62x39, and .308. :thumbup

Got a g36 from ebay for 113 shipped. It's pretty decent plastic. The Marlin 60 isn't going to work because the trigger is part of the trigger guard and not the receiver. It probably can be done but i'm not willing to invest the time or effort. I guess i'll buy a 10/22 and call it a day.

If you do it let me know, I'm thinking about one also. Especially if you can do it with marlin hardware. We could hook up for a BARF build day.

So, I spent some time today checking out the various 9mm pistols out there and I think I've started to narrow it down. The Glock 17 is nice but just doesn't feel quite right to me. Checked out the S&W MP and I don't like the trigger. Based on feel in my hands (no shooting time), I like the:

- Sig P226
- HK USP 9mm
- Springfield XD 9
- Taurus 24/7 9mm

I'm not sure if I like the Sig no safety design but it does seem nice to be able to cock rather than go through the double action process. The de-cocker is nice but this is the most expensive pistol of the bunch.

I've heard great things about the HK but I don't know shit about this stuff.

I like the features on the XD, good feel, grip safety, free crap with purchase and it seems priced right but I haven't heard anything.

The Taurus seems to be a copy cat of another model (can't remember which one) but the price is great and the life time warranty would be nice.

So, which one would you recommend to a new shooter looking for a reliable, easy to disassemble/reassemble pistol that isn't too finicky about ammo?

I'm going to go shoot this week at TargetMasters to get some time with each of them (if available).

Thanks!

We just went though the exact motions for the exact caliber for Roxy. THIS IS IN NO WAY MEANT AS A SHOT TO YOUR MANLINESS.
With no input from me she chose between 2 guns, the XD and the M&P.
Then I picked apart the models by mechanism; ergonomics, company rep, previous design (XD is East European design), and finally price. The one thing we did not consider is aesthetics, and that is the only category that the M&P would have been better in.

The XD was in our opinion better than the M&P. The rest were eliminated by color from a girl. :rofl

I'm headed to Reeds tomorrow night with a few folks to check out the Sig, HK, and XD. I'm still leaning towards the XD but I want to see how it shoots compared to the Sig...

I believe Guns, Fishing & Stuff in Farifeild or wherever they are has an XD for rent.

Of course you can always shoot my 226 but I also think you should try out Ratters' Walther P99 if he's feeling generous. A lot of folks don't like 'em but I found that I really enjoy shooting that thing.

I'd take a serious look at the Beretta I linked to. They are a great pistol and the guy is not asking much at all for it. And of course, as soon as I'm among the living you are welcome to try anything I have.

Hey Brandon, you might want to check out this one:

I'm a big fan of buying used guns, most of them a rarely shot and are significantly cheaper than new. :thumbup

I missed that link but that's a freekin' deal and a half. Brandon you'd be wise to give this a serious look. If Antioch had the 92fs Inox in 9mm rather than .40 I'd have bought that instead of the sig. Being the manly man you are, I'm sure you could handle the heft of the piece.

Reed's range has everything but the Taurus (which is Ok by me). I'm headed over there tomorrow to spend some time with the top candidates.

The baretta didn't feel great in my hands when I held it at Target Masters and I don't really like how it looks.

I'm giddy about getting a pistol and I can't wait to go shootin' :teeth

I'd recommend also getting a .22 tack driver. Shooting steels with a .22 revolver especially is oddles of fun and cheap "shoot where you look" practice.

This is excellent advice! You can develop your shooting skills with a .22 for LOTS less $ and all the skills transfer to bigger guns.

Did someone say Beretta!?

:shocker:laughing

Barring any sort of catastrophe, I should be buying this bad boy tomorrow. Now the painful 10 day wait. :(

I think it has a goofy shape. For me, the asthetics of a gun are its overall proportions, and of each part to the rest of the gun.

For how tall it is, particularly looking from the bottom of the triggerguard to the top of the slide, it's really tall & thick, compared to how skinny the grip is where it meets the triggerguard.

The grip safety just kinda pokes out without blending in with the lines of the gun.

The trigger is just an odd banana-looking thing, rather than a nice tapered piece, like on the Beretta 92fs.

Ugly? Really? What makes a gun ugly to you gun guys? I know it's personal preference but I'm curious...

Compare with a G19, which I think has a nicer proportion of hight of slide to thickness of grip. I think the G19 is the best looking of the GLOCKS, the rest of them all being too long in one direction or another.

The P7M8 would be the best looking gun around, but for the squeeze-cocker part on the front of the grip. (All kinds of sweet pics here)

and I've always liked the looks of Beretta's little Tomcat.

Which, compared to the slightly smaller Bobcat, the Tomcat has a much nicer sculpting of the triggerguard, and a barrel more in size proportion to the rest of the gun.

I really like my Bobcat, but it looks too spindly in the triggerguard and barrel. But hey, it's a fun little .22!

So there's a summary of what I prefer in the shape of my handguns.

Nice! I have a love/hate thing going on with those guns. I like the looks, esp the bull barrel. I LOVE the way they shoot. I HATE the take down/cleaning procedure.

I didn't even know the tomcat existed.

How does it compare size wise to the bobcat? I have a bobcat and carry it sometimes if I'm wearing shorts/light clothing and still want to be armed. But I'm not a fan of rim fires(esp the beretta) for realibility. I get a lot of ftf with the bobcat.
